Erika is a perfumer.
I haven't kept up with Claude but if it's talking to an NPC and it discusses that Erika makes or enjoys perfume, it could be interpreting that as needing to get perfume to enter the gym or challenge Erika.
Instead of it just being flavor text to characterise someone.

If there's nothing in the game itself about perfume, it could be referencing online material that goes into detail about Erika and perfume, which is prevalent in the anime and TCG.

It's because it's the plot of episode 26 of the tv show:

>The party arrives in Celadon City, a perfectly pleasant town full of large department stores, condominiums, and fancy arcades. Brock and Misty are mesmerized, listening to a pretty young girl in a miniskirt, selling perfume. Appalled by the perfume's price, Ash is kicked out of the department store, and heads for the PokΓ©mon gym alone, but he is denied entrance to the Celadon Gym. The perfume that Ash criticized in the department store is produced in this gym. Brock and Misty enter the gym and befriend those who inhabit it, but Ash must go to some outrageous lengths in order to even set foot in the gym, let alone prove himself worthy of battle against its Master.

Will he give up on the perfume quest and try to cross-dress to get into Erika's Gym too? Only time will tell.

LLMs as I understand them are essentially a predictive model that outputs the text calculated to be most likely to follow the prompt based on a big database of existing text.
The fact that they've developed enough that once can be juryrigged for something like this and be somewhat functional is nothing but impressive to me.

The spin puzzle would be passable if he had a strong harness like GPT had - an automap, where every location was already "scanned", so that GPT remembered every place he's been to, it also had all cuttable trees pre-marked, etc. It had access to much more info from the game's RAM, including knowledge of where all items are, which NPCs to talk to in order to progress etc. It had much better "vision", as it saw its movements as it moved, while Claude only sees screenshots of where his movement has taken him (the only help from game's RAM being: coordinates he's currently at with description "Route 8" for an example and which tiles he can walk on and which ones are "red", so impassable.). GPT had another GPT serving as CC, only that this one remembered all locations, all routes and its movements recorded "live". Claude doesn't have that on purpose, that's why he's the most interesting. It's just an LLM, which isn't at all made to play games. His harness is weak compared to what GPT had (I don't even mention Gemini as it was pure cheating - there was a jeet feeding it info what to do and where to go every time it was stuck).
Claude is born retarded and all he can depend on is his "logic". He can only remember things that he writes down as important, but he doesn't know what IS important - you can see him clearing his knowledge base which contains info about locations he's been to, that's why he finds himself looking for the same thing, like Pokemon Center, twice or more times. Because he deleted the "memory" of being there since his "logic" deemed it "useless information cluttering his knowledge base", the purpose being getting rid of info he doesn't need that otherwise could confuse him later on. But we can see how that works. Yet, with each iteration, he's getting better and better, just by relying on his "logic". His navigator is what fucks him up in situations like spin puzzle, since, like I said, he only sees snapshots of before and after.

I mean, he has the badges right there as visual proof. Neither Brock nor Misty say they're fakes either. Plus Season 1 was full of wacky shit that wasn't in the games so more than 8 gyms isn't that farfetched.

According to first two seasons, there's a lot more gyms than 8. For example they say that they should skip Sabrina's gym and find another thatΒ΄s easier. ThereΒ΄s even unofficial bootleg gyms that arenΒ΄t recognized by Pokemon League and thus cannot hand out applicable gym badges. Its just the games that have gyms limited to 8.

Its inherent limitation of LLMs. The LLM cannot learn per se, just find best (or second/third/... best) correlation. Since thereΒ΄s nothing in the training data telling him arrow-shaped tiles in Pokemon game moves you to direction their sharp end is pointing until you hit impassable object, he simply cannot understand what the tiles do and why he keeps teleporting around. This is obvious even to a toddler, so it isnt explained anywhere in written sources, and such Claude literally has no good correlations directing him towards how to solve it.

i think the main problem is that he's trusting his navigator too much, which tells not only tells the LLM they're navigatable tiles but doesn't tell them they have special effects. it also doesn't avoid them when navigating from point A to B which confuses claude even more because he has no idea which tile was responsible for spinning him backwards

Claude doesn't have a strong harness (that is, trained specifically on the game and for the game he's playing with ALL data ONLY for this singular task - instead he's using what he learned from the Internet, hence hallucinating Perfume Quest) and extra tools that GPT (automap that also memorized all the places he's been in and marked all special tiles, like cuttable trees or spin tiles, etc.) or Gemini (with a jeet handholder who fed it direct hints that amounted to full solutions every time it got stuck) had. He doesn't see his movements live, only the screenshot before and after. So, he doesn't even notice he's spinning. That's one of the reasons why he's having trouble, his navigator fucks him up here. That this glorified chatbot starts to distryst the Navigator shos his "logic", while far from ideal, is already pretty strong. The previous anons are retarded. Cleaning his context is because LLMs can only handle so large of an input, and performance starts to fall off significantly as you go towards those limits. This window of input is called the "context", so when Claude's starts to get too large from the repeated inputs, he's been told to summarize and compress it down before deleting everything. This is why he'll sometimes start thinking completely different after a context clear since he's no longer able to reference his previous thought patterns as clearly, or at all depending on the inputs that he gives himself right at the start of a new context window.

The other anon is talking about his memory bank and other persistent files that survive through a context clear which is intended as a way for Claude to preserve important information, with the obvious problem Claude is terrible at deciding what's important and what isn't.

It doesn't know what anything is and doesn't really make choices or "think". It creates answers based on statistical analysis, basically. It aggregates a ton of data it can find from anywhere and then predicts the right answer based on the info it starts with.

Statistically, most parts of PokΓ©mon are not the Celadon hideout. LLMs runs into problems like this all the time where they can't "reason". The answer to solving problems like this thus far have just been to acquire even more data and burn even more money.

It's sophisticated tech but it's also wierldy primitive in how inelegant LLM companies are about it. It's also why they're no longer advancing very fast. They can't convince investors to spend more and don't know where to find more data.

he will start writing out intricate notes on what tile sends him where, pinpoint more or less EXACTLY where he needs to go...
and then he sees stairs.
if they are the northern b3 stairs, he goes up them, if they are the southern ones at the edge of the tard trap, he bum rushes them until he forgets all of his plans.

Pause emulator when waiting for input.
Only give Claude the commands Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, Start, Select, Wait.

you ever see these images and then wonder about the physical logistics of it? The trainers treat these badges as sacred but they're just mass manufactured pins. The gym leaders/league would probably order them in bulk by the thousands where they just show up in giant plastic bags. Trainers see them as a mark of accomplishment handed to them on some velvet pillow or something, but the gym leaders just pull them out of the bag, wipe it down with their shirt, give it to the trainer with a good job, then go back at the end of the day and input in their inventory system to track when they need to order the next bag.
