tried playing this game a few years ago, and it's an absolutely average boring doom clone, hexen was much more interesting just to figure out my way out of the map
>>718041345
Yeah Hexen's a lot better. Heretic's enemy variety is insanely doggy doo, but the maps are sorta neat. Once you go Hexen you'll never want to go back.

it seems that the mongoloids at Nightdive recorded Heretic's soundtrack with the SC-55 and forgot that the game was composed on Soundblaster AWE32 thus the soundtrack in roland loses some notes and sounds quality.
And this is because Doomworld called this out for years.
Also Hexen soundtrack is muffled and it isnt using the CD Digital Audio that uses Roland SC-88Pro Recordings
>>718045565
Nothing at all, the retards just screwed the soundtrack, but everything else is great.
Watching zoomers opening their eyes over years of being lied to about hexen and heretic being inferior to doom finally came true, and the new episodes are Serpent levels of hard
>>718056661
I think the worst part of the expansion was every level being an annoying scavenger hunt where you press a switch and then try to guess what it did. Or looking for a random linedef that opens a secret door or something. That shit really made the two episodes feel longer than they should have.
>>718057794
You can pretty much ignore/circumvent him so he's not that big of a problem. The six (or seven? Can't remember) iron liches in the level are a much bigger issue.

The tweaks to the remaster do help it a fair bit. Weapons are more consistent in damage, slightly more effective and maybe enemy health isn't so spongy, not entirely sure yet, so it's a lot snappier in pacing. Same goes for Hexen really; it's still a slow start with little mana and your basic weapons at first, but in general enemies are a lot less painful to fight in terms of how much damage you can deal when playing smart.
>beat hexen, love It >Check back in DOS mode >Arrow controls, no mouse aim, tank controls, fucking run button, SOUNDBLASTER
No Wonder I breezed Through the game when I wasnt piloting a crippled ferrari
>>718040951 (OP)
I think I just reached that level yesterday. I've played Heretic before, but I had forgotten how tanky most enemies feel. Doom has much better pacing in its combat. Still enjoying it, but it's not as good as I remembered
>>718041978
Heretic is a Quake 1 situation in which you're probably better off just skipping the original campaign and going straight to the new original episode and community mods.
It has not aged well at all and the fact that they had to buff all the weapons and nerf enemy health to make it less of a boring slog says a lot.
>>718060061
Yeah, but that doesn't feel good to me. It sort of relies on you know what you're up against, and that a harder pack isn't just around the next corner. Don't get me wrong, I use tomes fairly liberally, but I'd honestly prefer Doom-styled powerups that are triggered automatically. That way I wouldn't feel the pressure of trying to figure out when the optimal time is to use it. It's like consumables in RPGs that you never end up using because what if the next boss is harder and I'd want to use it then? And just because the tomes exist doesn't mean weak weapons are any more fun to use. I'd rather not have the tomes if it meant all weapons did 15-20% more damage by default. The alternative firing modes you get do nothing for me
>>718061205
Friendly reminder that if you do play Heretic/Hexen without your parents arguing loudly and threatening divorce in the next room, you DID NOT beat the game
>>718040951 (OP)
Game too fast for me. No, not even the game. Just character.
I'm too retarded to find secrets, on second map I managed to miss 5 out of 7 secrets, despite running the map multiple times. It feels even worse than Blood and Enclave.
Auto aim feels off, manual aim looks like shit.
What's taught there? How's the campus? What are they cooking over at the Silent Refectory? How much of a fright is the big guy with that third mana cube during exams? Any alums that can share some experience with the seminary? Is there a tuition, and does it cost an arm and a leg?

I'm super disappointed that Hulshult's version of Heretic's docks music and E1M9 doesn't have the electric guitar, that shit was cool. Still sounds fantastic, though.
>>718066663
i mean check the AWE32 soundtrack vs the Roland one, you will notice that all music sounds better in AWE32 than Roland that is missing a few notes, a good comparison is The Crypts
>>718062661
But I don't know how each level plays out until I've beat it. Maybe there's another maulotaur in a monster closet, and I'll end up regretting using a tome on a room full of mid-tier enemies
>>718070037
While that's true, this game came out like a year after Doom. At the time there was only so much they could do by having a bunch of imp variants since there wasn't much else to go off of.
At least Maulotaur and Iron Lich are interesting to fight.
>>718073540
They could have cut the inventory system entirely if it didn't play well, and added the powered-up attacks as alt fires or as additional weapons that occupied the same slot (like the SSG)
I felt there was something off with the new balance but can't really place it. Bigger enemies are less tedious sure, but the gargoyles have instead become the most fearsome on the hardest difficulty. They don't die to a full crossbow, not sure if that was always the case and have HP almost like the other enemies. On top of that all shooting enemies are so fast at the highest difficulty that doors don't even have time to open halfway before you get completely curbstomped by a barrage of projectiles.
>>718041345
It really is literally just Doom but with a magic theme rather than sci-fi. However I like the game a lot for that. It was meant to be this way.
>>718076432
There's nothing to fix. In fact the one that needs fixing is the wraithverge beceause outside of its cool factor the ghosts will half the just wander off and despawn and waste your ammo. Pathing is worse in general because ettins get stuck all the time and can't move and enemies can hit you through closed doors.
>>718076664
That only really happens if you fire it from a long distance. The ghosts are typically very good at clearing a room and often kill enemies in adjacent rooms as a bonus.
>>718070037
Probably would have been better if Heretic went in a sort of RPG light direction in hindsight but I still like the game. Pretty good idea could have been between each level you upgrade things like health, the wands and all that shit. Then the spongy enemies wouldn't have been as noticeable if you could upgrade your favorite weapons into their tome counterparts and have a permanent powered up weapon.
>install this shit with GZDOOM >boring af on splattermeister or whatever difficulty >switch over to Doom II ultra-violence with bolognese gore mod >having a great time
ya, Heretic and Hexen both just suck ass
