720p is optimal for handhelds

You are correct, but the spoiled brats of the internet who haven't seen sunlight in years will cry about it

While 720p was good for the Switch and 800p was good for the Steam Deck, the Switch 2's 1080p screen has made me want a 1200p screen for the Steam Deck 2 now.

switch 2 lcd being slower is embarrassing. Why is this graph missing switch oled?

its really not much better, i honestly still prefer using my deck for any emulation with the OLED panel. that any the fact that the emulation is just better.

I think 2560x1600 would be best since you can run at 1280x800 and still get a decent-ish image in any game. At 1920x1200 you can't really do 960x600 since that's too low. I guess with FSR and shit this is becoming less relevant but FSR often looks really bad so having a nearest neighbor option won't hurt.

But are you paying handheld game prices?

If only you fuckers knew how much that would hurt your battery life, inflate your system price and nuke your frames. Careful what you wish for, else you'll be bitching that the Steam Deck 2 is over priced inferior garbage.

This 1200p resolution problem gets fixed with a 16GB RAM.

>>718049217
That's too much and would be too big. Valve wants a balance of performance and efficiency, 1600p would be a battery drain and get rid of the budget price for the base Steam Deck 2.

How the fuck did you disagree with me and then agree with we again? Ram and VRam would have a mild effect. Resolution mostly uses GPU clock speed.

720p or 800p in case of steamdeck is all you need.
What's the point in putting higher resolution screen if all games have to be upscaled from 720p to have decent fps

16GB combined with FSR4 is enough. I mean the PS6 handheld is doing 1080p with 16GB of RAM and FSR4.

>>718050719
FSR4 will help it, keep it from using the full RDNA 5 GPU.

Ram or Vram means fucking nothing when gpu cannot calculate whatever the fuck it calculates. You are either retarded or baiting

Recommenting on this, they'll probably go with 24GB of RAM but can Valve keep it at $550?
Anonymous No.718051181 >>718051317 >>718051324
1080p is objectively better. Just not at the cost of terrible battery life and ghosting.
Anonymous No.718051317

I think Nintendo just wanted to make a generational leap over something that feels like a Pro. Deck 2 will have the same problem and will just bump everything up, 1200p, 24GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD, FSR4, and that's just the base LCD model.

...yeah, that's the whole point genius. If there weren't tradeoffs then why not a 4k handheld
Anonymous No.718051434
>>718051324
I honestly hope Nintendo and Valve stop at 1080p and 1200p, I don't feel there's a point for 2K or 4K handhelds, plus I doubt we'll get another generational leap anytime soon.8th to 9th gen already didn't feel like a generational leap as far as PlayStation and Xbox were concerned.

No excuse for handhelds in 2025 not being 1080p and 120hz.

Battery life?
Anonymous No.718051701

This, it's why the Steam Deck 2 must be 1200p and 120hz to match. It's one of the only ways to feel like a generational leap from the original Steam Deck.

And they all feel practically equivalent in speed. I swear you "gaming forensics" faggots are delusional. A slight change in color grading is enough to send half of you into a spergout tantrum.
Anonymous No.718051771
720p~800p with OLED and 120fps is ideal. They're fucking 7 or 8 inch screens, you don't need 4k or some shit.
Anonymous No.718051860 >>718051912
i agree that 720p is perfect for handhelds
the only reason nintendo (any every other handheld pcs) uses 1080p+ screen is that nobody is making 720p screens anymore.
Anonymous No.718051912

Pretty much, does this also kill 900p screens for handhelds as well?

After reading this thread, I am happy to announce that if the Steam Deck 2 increases resolution and you guys get mad at the battery life or price. Then I am not letting you hear the end of it.

I'm already prepared for the Steam Deck 2 to have the same amount of battery life as the Switch 2. It'll have good performance and efficiency though.

The pixel density on a Switch screen at 720p is so much higher than 4K on a big monitor lmao. It's actually not even close.

Honestly, having owned both 1 and 2, holding 2 is much more pleasant to look at and play with.
I love having a bigger brighter screen on my Switch 2.
Anonymous No.718056043 >>718057707
No, it's not optimal.
I have an OLED Deck and I think it would definitely benefit from a higher resolution. There's a fuckton of games that benefit from that higher resolution and many of them would run just fine on the deck at over 1080p if it was supported.

On a small screen it doesn't really matter. I'd rather have the extra battery.

Anonymous No.718057917 >>718058075

Why?
Also, upping the resolution on a backwards compatible handheld was a dumb move. So many Switch 1 games look like shit on Switch 2 now because of it.
The benifits are barely noticeable while the negatives are glaring.

Maybe in a few years when there is an OLED revision with better battery, and switch 1 games have been patched for 1080p handheld mode, the switch 2 will finally be good.
Anonymous No.718058245
Speaking of resolution, why the fuck does phones push it so high these days? Wouldn't battery life be better at a lower res? Not like you are going to spot a difference at such a small screen.
