Correct me if I'm wrong but I have this notion that PC gaming's job in Japan was porn games since forever, every time I see pc gaming depicted in their media is for some porn vn and the occasional mmorpg. Now, payment processors banned those games everywhere, portables like Vita and Switch took their part of the vn cake (although, without porn but still) and phones with their gachas took the rest. The last nail in the coffin is the PS brand which job is to be a dumbed down pc box to keep people away from pc, but in this case, instead of porn, the last niche job its stealing from pc is to be a premium machine with the latest tech, so, PC gaming in the eyes of the japanese was stripped of almost all its value.

This is to be expected from Japan as they continue to embrace convenience. A lot of Japs travel often and commute to work, and don't have a lot of time to spend on stationary devices like Consoles and PC as a result, this is the main reason why mobile gaming is so popular over there. The other reason being that they're moving into smaller living spaces which may not accommodate bulky hardware, those who still opt to game on PC do so in internet cafes rather than at home.

I am 100% sure it actually did decrease by 3 million if you're counting Visual Novels and Eroge as game that people played they've all moved on to Mobile phones or play them on their PCs.

Meanwhile if we're talking actual what every sane person would consider games I have been visiting Japan since 2009 and there no quesiton that PC gaming is more popular then ever by a long shot.

Vtubers and Covid got million hooked and they're seem to be staying, young Japanese kids are playing Minecraft and shooting games something everyone was saying was impossible because "Japanese people get motion sickness while playing FPS game sand other utter nonsense"

Comparing Yodobashi Akiba in 2009 and 2025 it's like another dimension. Half the year on the gaming floor is PC gear today. With a small PS5 section on one side and a much bigger Nintendo section on the other side.

And thats not all, softmap that used to be focused on Macbooks and iMacs is now a gaming one.

Also in the last 5 years as Steam gets more of gatcha they're becoming the defacto high end way to play your gatcha games in the best way. So that market is going big too as you can see here.
