>spend ten years working on a ROMhack
>it's a full on total conversion, extremely impressive from a technical standpoint
>and it's balanced like absolute garbage, complete amateur stuff
Game balancing is an insanely underrated aspect of video game design, and it's something that 99% of ROMhack creators will never understand.

it's just metroid fusion but remade in the (imo worse) super metroid engine? what's the point?

It's a completely different game. One loaded with instant death traps.

I read they nerfed it.

Just because you are bad at video games doesn't mean everyone else is.

Constant instant kills is bad game design, objectively.

The drama around this hack has been amusing.

Almost every ROMhack I've played has been this poorly balanced. PikminSquared gave me hope, but X-Fusion was just the typical nonsense.

Unironically filtered. Especially if you're playing ver 1.1.
Just because you can't mindlessly mash the shot button like other Metroid games doesn't mean the game is unbalanced.

Dying in two shots to SA-X because you didn't imagine in your head the exact series of movements some dumb autist thought up is bad design. Literally and objectively. Especially since there's no actual logic to it.
Anonymous No.718054618 >>718054685
Mods are made by people who are obsessed with the game why would they design it for normies?

You'd think the game would be more like the original, rather than the usual ROMhack jank.

The SA-X encounters really aren't that different from the original from a design standpoint. They've always been trial and error.
The only major difference in X-Fusion is you're dying in two hits instead of three.

>The SA-X encounters really aren't that different from the original from a design standpoint.
The originals were ten times more intuitive and ten times less frequent.

The Yakuza kill trap and the final SA-X chases were very poorly designed but that's a pretty small portion of the overall runtime. It's pretty in-line with Fusion's Hard mode otherwise, I liked it quite a bit.

How harsh is the punishment for failing and dying in one of these segments?

The whole hack is full of bullshit that makes me never want to replay it. Seriously not a single person has ever found the blue X blob section fun, or like half of the hack in general enjoyable.

You can paralyze the blue X for several seconds by shooting them. It's tough but it's manageable.

It's still complete garbage design.

You go back to the last save which is almost always a room or two away at most.

That doesn't sound too bad, but I can understand the frustration if these trial and error sections keep popping up constantly. It grinds pacing to a halt.

It's basically kaizo slop anyway, might as well just use rewind/savestates for something this poorly designed.

You sound like you don't enjoy difficult games but instead of accepting that fact you're blaming the game instead.

>>718055634
They're as hard or frequent as >>718054894 makes them seem. If you've played the other 2D metroid games then it shouldn't take you more than a handful of tries to get through them.
Anonymous No.718055943 >>718056149
>>718055840
Kaizo style """difficult""" hacks are complete trash. If you're constantly getting two shot by things you couldn't have possibly predicted, then that is objectively atrocious game design.

I don't even touch kaizo or "grandmaster" levels
I probably would have tried to make a grandmaster level when I was 12 lol

From what it seems, the problem isn't the difficulty, but the frequency of these segments that expect you to fail and retry. It's not difficult to learn a pattern to repeat. You just end up creating roadblocks without any satisfying or engaging gameplay.
