The only reason why Kratos was the protagonist of these games was because he was so iconic in the original trilogy. The game getting weirdly preachy about old Kratos bad up to and including nuKratos having a whole scene where he rants at a old Kratos lounging in a chair is cringe because old Kratos is literally the only reason why nuKratos is even here.

It also makes it clear that they didn't just make a game about Kratos being a dad, they did this deliberately to attack the depiction of masculinity in the old God of War games. It was incredibly lazy and uncreative. What happens after GoW3? Why is Kratos up north? What happens post Mt olympus? How is Kratos even alive? None of these are answered. Instead you get a timeskip, you have a child, and your wife is dead.
Watching Kratos battle with himself mentally dealing with his 'trauma' and having actual character development and coming to terms with what he did would have honestly been cool to watch. I don't speak for most of /v/. But for me personally as someone that never liked God of War, the new games just proved to me that God of War is a hypocritical insincere franchise.

It's that Kratos' "redemption" means nothing in the long-run. He says to "be better", but none of his actions really reflect doing better. There is no call to action or true wisdom, he's just become an isolationist coward who doesn't use his strength for good, only being wrestled into that role. If the point was that he spends his time to raise his son and have a peaceful life, that's understandable, but it doesn't atone for what he did, it's him running away from his past.
He does argue to "be better". But never does in the long-run, every action he takes only makes situations worse.
I made that comparison to Asura's Wrath because Asura, despite being a vengeful ball of rage, still managed to arguably do far more "good" in terms of actually trying to save and help people. He was still angry and almost unhinged, but in the long-run, he arguably embodies the "be better" message that nu-Kratos tries to dispense, whereas nu-Kratos only says it, but never practices it.
