It generally took itself more seriously. The atmosphere felt lonelier and more hostile. The music was more ambient.

The only time Portal 2 ever felt the same way to me was at the very beginning of old Aperture, and that completely falls apart the moment Cave Johnson starts speaking.

Traded Portal 1's oppressive and lonely atmosphere with only hints of what might be going on in the outside world, or what happened to everyone else, with the occasional, brief bouts of quirky humor, for on-the-nose random and quippy reddit humor with characters who never shut the fuck up and allow you to soak up the atmosphere.

Puzzles in Portal 2 also sucked, because they became way less about smart application of portals, and more about spotting the one square of portal-able surface. They overused surfaces you couldn't place portals on to such a degree that puzzles became linear and dull. The feeling of smartly using the tool you were given was replaced with the exasperation of finally finding the one square you're allowed to use the tool on after a pointlessly dull hide-and-seek segment.

This is my main gripe as well. P2 had some cool mechanics with the different goo types and all they did with it was very quickly devolve into playing Where's Waldo to find the one magic spot you're supposed to use and the rest of the "puzzle" is just rote execution with blindingly obvious steps from there.

I like how it went for a more comedic tone mostly because the idea that HL is just this serious and gloomy universe but then somehow there's just the world's most wacky and absurd robot story going on in the depths of upper Michigan is funny to me.

Portal 1 is like 2 hours long so it is tighter, but only by default for ADHD fellows.
Portal 2 is definitely better as far as a full game goes.

I like portal 2's OST
1's is cool but it's really mostly noise to me. I like how 2 went for a more "cinematic" music score with orchestras and character theme-motifs that go all over and complement each other!
I also LOVE the constant foreshadowing of Cara Mia Addio.
The companion cube sings that song then the light bridges then you hear it from PotatOS' lament and finally after you defeat the boss it plays quietly just before Chell faints.... all that to warm you up to the actual opera! it's so kino.

When I was in Germany I met up with a guy who agreed to be tied down and tickle tortured by me. After we were finished he kept doing Portal 2 Wheatley impressions really loudly as I walked him back to the station. They reverberated off the high terraced rooftops of the old medieval German buildings. People could probably hear them several blocks away. I wanted to crawl out of my own skin. He was cute though. Drove him crazy and made him safeword just by stroking a feather along his soles

Many people don't seem to realize that the humor in portal 1 was very dry and that Glados being an ai and not prerecorded messages was also a reveal. The story was minimal, which created a mysterious atmosphere. Portal 1 was also relatively grounded and had actual horror elements in it. It's a really short game, but every puzzle is strong, so it's easy to replay again and again.
Portal 2 is an outright comedy game and its scale is unbelievably huge. While puzzles are generally harder, a lot of them also require you to find that one spot of white paint. It's a much less even game and since it's also longer it requires more commitment to finish, so every weak part sticks out in the player's mind more.
