Why even bother with having fantasy races with such trivial differences in them when compared to humans when you can find all kinds of diverse phenotypes even within just humanity itself? These fellas look way more exotic and strange than any elf or a dwarf does and they are still just human.

We work with what we have. They are the least human-like race among the ones that's available. Aside from dragonborn obviously, but dragonborn do not count because they're furrybait race.

Not when you're trying to use them to make a correlation about people not wanting to play non-humans and then saying that the even less human race that is significantly more popular doesn't count because it just doesn't okay.
The fact of the matter is that nobody wants to play them because they're fuck ugly, and they fail to attract the people who want non-humans because they're literally humans, just extremely ugly ones.

The solution is to have a team of custom characters.
The player can have their main human character.
The second slot occupied by the main human character's cute elf waifu.
Then the other slots have the super weird monster people with super unique gimmicks.

If your character is a lone hero and everyone else is established, of course almost all players will pick the pretty protagonist races closest to human.
