There's some pretty good stuff for graphics as well as one that disables the Paradigm Shift camera cut animation so that it's more like XIII-2. It makes combat a lot faster. I think it may have been a mistake only putting Lightning on the cover for the US
But in reality, there were also a lot of people who bought the game because of her sole presence on the cover.
She's the most striking one of them, after all.

But the reality is, when the game gives you control over the party, you are free to make the party whatever lineup you want.
You don't have to have Lightning in the party, and you can control whoever you want as party leader.

If you want to ride on Chocobo's, do missions, and save the world while playing as Snow/Sazh/Hope/Fang/Vanille, you are free to do it.
The story is 100% an ensemble once you're running around Pulse.
There are even side missions that discuss character relationships between characters like Sazh and Fang, who don't really get an opportunity to interact during most of the game.

Companies never get it right, it's always outsourced to pajeets. There are a few old games that have running fan projects trying to upscale backgrounds using AI like RE2 & RE3 but they never look good. The only HD textures that work is the RE4 HD project and that's because the geometry is already very good and the modders put an insane level of effort and passion into it. 13-3/LR is even more annoying. The game used to run at 60+ no problem, but on win10/11 it now runs with frame pacing worse than the PS3. Playing the game on RPCS3 is actually more recommended than the PC port. I had better luck under linux, but it still ain't great.

I beat every Cieth Stone before going to Eden and it was very fun, too bad most of the game content is braindead easy, the best part of FFXIII was the world and i will pay for a remake that isn't just a bunch of corridors, but alas, that won't happen

Yeah, it takes it's sweet ass time to get going. But you can make it go by faster by literally just running past everything.
Just don't fight the trash mobs all the time. Fight once or twice and then keep running. XP is pretty barebones too through most of the early game.
It's a hallway with cutscenes and you just gotta get invested in the story.
It was also fun to juke and run past enemies. It creates a dynamic that's not present in any other FF game.

in FFX for example you want to fight a lot because you get spheres for the grid, items to use and later mix, gear to equip that has big impacts on what you can do with your squad, overdrive progression, etc.
XIII was so barebones when it came to options in and out of combat. it made the dull corridors even less interesting.

Hell, I'd even rate 13 higher than 16. 15 and 16 both had their moments but they were surrounded by trash. 13 you could either stomach the linearity and weird paradigm combat and crazy sci-fi religious story or you couldn't. No. The combat is very fun with a full Paradigm deck. But the combat is obviously story limited during the extremely linear section.
So the game is just much longer overall if you're fighting every single mob you see instead of juking every other one.
The game even teaches you that you should run past enemies sometimes.
There's literally no real way to grind early because of the gates, and the fact that XP scales wildly later on.
The game is designed around fighting or evading each enemy that's in front of you and making that simple decision each time.
It's almost souls-like in the way that if you clear every enemy in front of you, you'll have the right XP to be at the designated level for the next boss.
That's why I like the progress gate. It keeps you from becoming over leveled and cruising through boss fights.
If you're losing a boss fight, it's because you're playing wrong, not because you're not "strong enough".

X I felt was worse than 13 for the normal fights. X leaned really hard into "you must use wakka for flying enemies, must use Auron for armored, etc." which meant most fights went exactly the same way every time. 13 acknowledged that and just made the game play itself, automatically picking the right counters for the enemies you've seen before. Not exactly great, but still, at least not tedious.
Also in X you find all these weapons and armor but they don't fucking do anything. You get slots to put stuff in, but it's something that doesn't have a use for 90% of the game. 13 at least had the random trash items being used as upgrade materials that made real world gains for your weapons.
I dunno, it's just that the more I dwell on 13 I realise it was better than people say it is and the more I think about X the worse it gets.

Doesn't seem that bad to me. Modern JRPG's are very long.
For comparison, think about 13 hours into Persona 5 Royal. I'm currently sitting at 200 hours in that game.

You will maybe, only just maybe be unlocking your third Eikon to use in battle at that point.
15-20 hours of fighting with only 1-2 sets of moves to use the whole time. On my PC playthrough I unlocked the Ramuh Eikon at around 20 hours.

it's true that X heavily leans into rock paper scissors but what breaks it up is how the EXP works. if you don't use Kimahri, he won't get any. so regardless of what enemy is in front of you, you are encouraged to not always use the optimal chars, in order to spread EXP evenly among your team. It's also mostly a tutorial early on like in XIII, except it doesn't last as long as isn't nearly as restricted.
the upgrade system in XIII was very uninteresting, there was nothing except for multiplier and exp mats. just 2 categories and all it did was make numbers go up.
in X you can actually build your own gear and weapons in lots of different ways.
and the stuff you find in X can definitely be useful if you get a lucky drop. for example finding a stone touch weapon for Yuna lets her 1 shot enemies with a single swing that usually only Lulu could come close to killing with multiple uses of magic. it's a specific example, but the point is that the drops can affect how you use your team and break up the rock paper scissors from earlier on.
even the more useless gear can become useful once you unlock gear modifications.
many people love to complain that the ultimate weapons are too hard to get, well you can just craft weapons that are almost as good if you want to.
i don't think any of XIII's systems and mechanics are bad but they need more to compliment them.

I watched the projared review after finishing FF2 and it was surreal to me.
He showed the GBA version, which excused the 'bad music' complaint I suppose (though his least favourite track was one of my favourites, the Imperial theme), but the way he shit on the story- FF2 was against 1 and 3, and DQ1-3, and it's fucking standout in story. It is the most involved story in a NES game I have played outside of DQ4, which was two years after FF2. It has heroes becoming villains, tragedy, it questions the nature of evil, and its presentation is top notch, like, this is one of the worst FF games? Because of its leveling system? Like, it's bad, but none of us are playing on NES anymore (even ignoring that barely anyone played FF2 on NES in the first place since it never came out on NES).

It's not exactly the same. Most of the time, the bulk of the data was the same, just in different file formats, with nonportable parts of the engine rewritten.
Remasters are usually new assets, and remakes shouldn't even be in the discussion because they're entirely different games.
Chrono Trigger on PC is still the original game and assets, just uglier due to their inability to use filters.
Mortal Kombat on PC is still the same assets as the Arcade, with the bulk of the code intact (except system specific shit).

I just finished FF13-1
I'd give it a 7/10. Mostly enjoyable, but I thought towards the end, that the fights became far too long and difficult. Not the fun type of difficult, but the "I just played perfectly for 20 minutes and got one shot by some bullshit for the third time in a row"-difficult. Long and tedious.
I also thought the story was.. unremarkable. I did read the lore documents and all that and did understand it all, I just found it to be... not bad, just unexceptional. I'm really tired of the JRPG trope of fighting a god-dude at the end who just wants to destroy the world. But mainly, the tediousness of the last act really soured me on the game

I am now playing FF13-2
I am enjoying it more so far. A lot more fast paced, feels more free in how I want to play. More optional stuff, more variation, and many quality of life upgrades

FFX's linearity was a flaw but it had a ton of nuances to its design to make it a lot more tolerable.
FFX's story was designed with linearity in mind - you're on a pilgrimage, so why wouldn't you keep going straight ahead? Compare that with FFXIII where there's no clear goal for the entire game, the entire cast is just running away, then being led places by the villain. There's no sense of progress. FFX's story in general was far better written in every way.
FFX had various distractions on that linear path. Mini-games, optional fights, NPCs who flesh out the world, and so on. FFXIII has NONE of that. It's run fight cutscene basically the entire game. Imagine if FFXIII had actual NPCs you could interact with on your journey that fleshed out the lore, rather than everything being put in datalogs.

Antiquated design. The Datalog is a more direct way to engage with the lore while also making it completely in the background, seamlessly.

It's smarter than just spamming conversations with NPCs. Especially when you're traversing through backrooms, side paths, corridors and facilities that aren't filled with citizens who want you to find their cat for them. You're on the run from the government, running and running and running.
