How did it become so ubiquitous in the west to assume that THE way you're meant to engage with a fictional character is by self-insertion?

I always play as a female, except in the PS3 version of Dark Souls, because male characters had an easier time duping boss souls as consumables. While not a tranny, I do wish I was a little girl for obvious reasons.

I've never been able to self-insert in games. I've always imagined it as me being a giant invisible eyeball located where the camera is and I control the character via tentacles attached to them. If it's first person then I've invaded their body like some sort of virus. Is it more fun if you self insert?

If it's a game with blank slate character creation, I create a male every time. Playing as a female when there are actual female characters is fine, creating a female as your avatar is not.

It entirely depends on how deep/open the character creation system is, if there are decent looking characters with lots of options and the character doesn't have much of a backstory then I'll play female and create my OC donut steel waifu that I created when I was young and have been writing about and drawing for most my life

If there's some sort of hard set backstory or limited customization options I either try to make a lore friendly character or just make a generic self insert guy

If its a game with some sort of customizable companion/party system then I create myself for the main character and my waifu as the follower

I have bunch of OCs in notebooks, took it as habit from /tg/. I have written down core features, how they live, what they look like, along with their own lore. Some of them are even arch enemies.

if there's dressup though, I'll make ladies occasionally and play with that. Generally the less roleplaying is emphasized the more likely it is I'll do that. So something light like Skyrim for example I have no issue just rolling a lady each time, though I tend towards male characters in Fallout. Something like Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate 3 I can't see myself playing anything but male. Something like Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea etc., almost exclusively making female generics. I think I'd have made all female units again in Labyrinth of Refrain if it was limited to 5 units deployed at any given time but it has way more than that and I didn't particularly like all the recolor portraits in that one.
The tl;dr is fickle autism but also big JRPG pixel titties
