Technically yes, it just give you less damage taken. But in DoW 1 it was better integrated, as it was just terrain features like craters, it had different tiers, and you even had negative cover for example a river.
The difference is one, is seamlessly integrated and provides minor bonuses, the other is gamey and shits on the balance.

the problem with 2 is that the map scale is designed for the singleplayer and is barely tolerable for multiplayer
the general game mechanics are all lifted from CoH, which as an evolution of the first DoW's mechanics is a good idea in principle, but both CoH and DoW1 have much more appropriate map sizes to accommodate those mechanics
the largest maps from DoW2 are like playing the medium or larger small maps in CoH and DoW1

Like it worked in DOW2 still, but as I said I cannot imagine you can scale this up any further, lat alone to a hundred entities. You'd either be left with everyone sitting in a massive line all across the map like it's WW1 with most units not even fighting or you make everyone fight at once which means everyone will just be in the open again so the game doesn't really need the system anymore. A map physically can't have every single pixel be cover for a unit to hind behind. And also clicking everyone into positions like that would be a nightmare. I just don't see how 2's cover would actually really make 1's massive army battles better in practice. I think it just sounds nice and if they did it it would just be a bullet point on the steam page. It would be "more realistic" surely someone would appreciate as a nice detail to have. Alright, I'll go over it again for you. The primary benefit is that the definitive edition is now a 64bit native program whereas the originals are still 32bit and required a compatibility layer in 64bit operating systems that were becoming increasingly defunct and unsupported. The problem with the older versions is that as hardware and software continues to advance, 32bit programs run into issues, the single most popular mod for example is the one that increases the memory the game is able to use, but the method it uses to do so is pretty jank. The definitive edition solves this by allowing it to draw on more memory to run. This is just one benefit, to say nothing of the game being future proofed against obsolescence on future hardware, at least for the next 10 or 20 years.

i guess that's why i never ran into any issues. i barely modded anything and only ever really used map packs. i tried the apocalypse mod once and found it extremely janky and unbalanced, and the tyranid's terrible animations really stood out in a game with so many well-animated sync kills and death combat animations. i guess i'm happy for people that modded the hell out of it, but i all i would have wanted was a proper visual update (models and animations, not just textures) and a fix for unit pathing, so i only got 50% of anything that would've enticed me to play again.
