Digging is unironically better than rolling.
iframes actually make sense when your player character is underground and is genuinely avoiding being attacked by not being hit.
As opposed to when you """""dodge"""""roll and just iframe through enemy attacks, phasing right through them.
And Mina even appears to have attacks and threats that can get you underground too. But who knows how much of an element that'll actually be in the full game.

iirc hitboxs were originally bad because it was computationally expensive to get them to accurately fit the shape of the actual sprites and calculate the position of complex shapes moment to moment. But is there any reason they should be particularly hard to do now in 2025?
Especially looking at Mina's enemy sprites. A lot of them look like they could fit pretty easily into a simple appropriately sized square hitbox.

You need the enemies to be dangerous obstacles and you can't given them a bunch of different attack animations and behaviors, so you give them 1 or 2 attacks and have them walk back and forth or towards the player and do damage on contract.

So much this, the digging mechanic is really good. You can control how long you're underground and burrow immediately after getting hit with iframes to reposition. (The iframes allowed me to bypass fire tiles which oddly enough you can't bypass nromally). Demo needed to showcase more trinkets/upgrades however.

contact damage isn't great, but it's downright stupid if the enemy has normal attacks as well
there are games where the contact damage is even higher than the animated attack so the meta was to tank the attack so you wouldn't touch their contact hitbox
