The ONLY important quality of a vidya protagonist character design is
>not the silhouette
>not memorability
>not the color scheme
>not how much of their personality is communicated through the design
It's "holy fuck I want to play the game where I can be this character right now"

It's such a simple rule yet the vast majority of devs these days fail to follow it, even in indie spaces

How was 90s character design so fucking peak? Especially Capcom. They were pumping out iconic characters left and right.

Limited visual fidelity meant character designs had to be simpler without a billion little details
Same reason why hand drawn animation has better designs than digital slop and especially CGI, limitations are important

The point is that those alone are worthless, but a character you'd want to play would probably still have them (but it's not a bad design if they don't)

This is like saying you don't need 'Loomis'-esqe fundamentals, you just need to draw gooder-rer.

that is the most nothing statement ever, if a character is designed like shit, I won't want to play as them. A character (especially a whole cast of characters) made under a design philosophy, creates visual cohesion.

This is why you're a midwit retard.

Even then, you can pick apart Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, etc because of their height, hair and garb. That might be the bare minimum, but that's still design philosophy. the fact you can visually tell who is a sayain speaks to that.

The characters in the OP are not iconic. Literally no one knows who they are or even what franchise they might be from.

Yeah, exactly. Back then you had nerds in dimly lit rooms sketching characters they thought were cool, not a marketing team optimizing "player retention metrics." That’s why so many 90s game casts are still instantly recognizable-creativity first, spreadsheets second.

I want you do define that right now. All the other things you listed can be enumerated. "Is the silhouette readable? Yes!" "Is the Color Scheme bright and contrasting enough to catch the players eye? Yes!" "Is the characters personality put through into their design? Yes!"

You can't look at a character and go "Is this cool?" when making a character. Everyone's definition of cool is different. That Knockoff "My Little Pony" fighting game looks fucking stupid to me, but there are people out there that are like "YES I WANT TO PLAY THIS". You're helping no one.

Inspiration from anime and movies. It's a hard pill to swallow but movies and anime are better at conveying action.

For the latter to be true, and for the viewer to be able to have an informed opinion, the character's job and gameplay style has to be communicated through the design. In other words, what you do in the game and how you do it. Your pic related is a textbook example of this.
