The real reason why the switch 2 hasn’t turned out to be a type of Wii U situation so far is because unlike the Wii, the switch’s success was largely based on Nintendo’s own ips. The best selling Wii games were blue ocean crap. The best selling switch games were stuff like smash ultimate, botw, mk8 dx, mario odyssey, animal crossing new horizons. Not to mention, unlike the Wii, most series have had their best selling titles on the switch like splatoon, fire emblem, Kirby, Metroid, and pikmin.

The WiiU had Sm4sh, MK8, Mario 3D World, Splatoon, and Pikmin too.

so, you're saying that it's doing well because it has games?

They'll learn the wrong lesson when Switch 2 fails, and think no one wants backwards compatibility

OP is talking about the transition period, so it kind of makes sense. The Wii sold well, but it alienated previous adult fans, and the only new fans it made were children that would take a few generations to grow up and understand the console generations better. By the WiiU, the casual fans were gone and most of the hardcore fans were gone too, which I think was just as big of a contributor to its failure as the poor marketing. The Switch, on the other hand, had people chomping at the bit for a new Switch. The market was begging for a new console, which was simply not true at the end of the Wii's life.

I don’t think it will but you can never be too sure

that was obvious from the start

the wii and switch audiences are completely different, the wii was nongamers, soccer moms, old people, lapsed salarymen etc, the switch for all the scoffing and seething it provoked had a far more traditional audience of casual gamers but also more dedicated ones, just a classic mainstream platform

what's the point of being backwards compatible with "game keys"?
the console gaming dream is dead. i will spend the rest of my life hoarding old media instead

The attach rate of Wii titles was fine, it's just that the Switch really raised the bar.

Its moreso that Nintendo tried to court an audience that only really cared about the "expanded audience" titles and Nintendo thought they could cater to two audiences. It should have been obvious that the Switch 2 was never going to be the Wii U because the Wii U's situation was so unique. The system you should look at is the 3DS. Beyond it being a handheld, it was also very expensive and didn't have a ton of games much like Switch 2. There was a long gap between releases, much like Switch 2 is about to have (the next game is Kirby and it doesn't even have a release date, let alone anything other than a teaser trailer). The system also sold faster than the DS did. We might be seeing something like this with the Switch 2. It's sold 6 million, but more than half (3.5) were in the first 4 days. So sales are already very front loaded. While we don't have Famitsu sales figures this week, it has dropped 30% for the last two weeks. The system is available at any retailer. It will likely run into the same issues of the 3DS because Nintendo is taking too long for games to come out and the system is very expensive. Couple this with the fact that spending is down industry wide and down especially with 18-24 yrs old and you'll see sales drop like a rock over the next few months.

Is this your plan for the next decade? Srsly I don't get what your goal is here. Get some actual life goals jfc.

I think 3ds is a fair comparison but I also think the drop off won’t be too bad, they’ll likely rise back up during November and December due to holiday sales and with the Mario world movie coming next year, it’ll probably help keep the money going, we’ll also likely find out some more news in September

He'll be comparing the Switch 2 to Wii U even after it will eventually pass Wii U's lifetime sales in under a year. He just can't be reasoned with anymore.

Must be retarded then.
Anonymous No.718095505 >>718098434
did people really think the WiiU was just an add-on and not a new console? I feel like it's just something everyone parrots that isn't really true but people accept it for being the main reason the console failed and not the fact that it just didn't have that many first party titles and the gimmick was lame.
I mean sure the name is just Wii with a U added but the console clearly looks different from the Wii. Were people just retarded back then? I could see normies making this mistake, but they would play xbox or PS anyway instead of a "kiddie" console

> didn't have a ton of games...
When are console companies going to realise this is a terrible idea and is making them slowly be replaced by the computer gaming? All consoles should have backward compatibility with all the titles if the technology allows it.

It wasn't just confusion over what it was, the marketing was absolute dogshit in every way. It was basically just children obnoxiously begging their parents to buy it for them without ever explaining what it was.
The games it had went on to sell gangbuster on the switch, with one of them being by far the switch's best selling game. But even if the marketing weren't total ass, it probably would've sold at best 30 million. People just don't want nintendo's home consoles and the trend on that was clear with the exception of the wii because of its gimmick that temporarily appealed to a ton of people who don't care about video games.
