Only reason this is a staple of current gen is it being pretty difficult
In 80s and early 90s all games were programmed to be very cryptic and very challenging to prolong play time and also rent shops and gaming magazines with walkthroughs needed business. Then as market spread and children became more spoiled, they coded the games to be more forgiving.
If most games on market were still very difficult, this series would be nothing special. Just another hack and slash.

But it's not difficult, it just doesn't hold your hand

I think the world design, bonfire/souls systems, art design and atmosphere are very interesting and well done in of themselves. The fact that revitalized difficulty and boss fights is undeniable even though it's become a stale, tired trend as of late

I'll repeat what some anon said before, the games are mediocre but when everything was a cover based shooter having any hack n slash derivative was nice.
The games didn't become popular because they're good, they just succeeded because everything else was and still is shit by comparison.

The only reason it's popular or people think it's super hard is successful marketing from Bamco. If you jumped on the PTD bandwagon and think Souls is peak game design, you're a dumb casual.

The games were never that difficult. DS1 would still be special, the other games not so much.
