I recently started on a Lineage 2 server called L2Elegant purely for the nostalgia, and because modern games are shit. Even though the server is fairly populated, 90% of the players are in their 30s. Same shit in other mmos, like WoW. Why don't zoomers play MMOs?

You can't take the current internet community and try to replicate what came previously. The MMO genre died a decade ago, or more to be honest. The only people keeping it going are either new players trying to jump onto previous trends or original players who just can't look in the mirror and tell themselves to just quit.

because nostalgia is the only reason anyone would play an mmo now
they were novel back in the day for socialization, but that isnt a compelling reason to sink endless time into a shitty game when there are countless forms of communication available that dont require a significant time investment

Zoomer here. Can't speak for anyone else, but I've never really gotten into multiplayer gaming of any kind. I mostly just play niche indie games.

Why the fuck would you expect them to play a genre that shit it's pants over a decade ago while it's head hangs off the bed drooling and barely alive. There probably is more people playing them today than back then(undoubtedly with china if you want to include them) but vidya has a way higher market cap now which is why the space is flooded with 300 new games everyday. They always had that novelty aspect of young internet age. It was new and different to suddenly have say an ozzie you interacted with. Now every guild in classic wow has a token ozz. And of course wow, a freak phenomenon made their popularity retardedly outsized for a time.

Too time consuming. WoW is alright, but older games like L2 are hell. Leveling at a certain point requires you to kill hundreds/thousands of mobs

MMORPGs and their culture should have died with the Y2k culture. Web 2.0 really doesn't mesh well as everything went against this genre.
From the trannies, through discord, incompetent gen X devs, gay and lame propaganda, players unable to compete IRL so they do it here, minmaxing, handholding, internet censorship and fear of judgement, no time to just enjoy the virtual world you name it.
The players changed too. I remember having two friend who still were heavily invested into WoW past wotlk. Well guess what? One of them got groomed, and he's gay now and HIV+ the last time I heard of him, he might be dead already. The other one was a total skeltal mode who became a lardass. He has no skills, pushing his mid 30's and his only saving belt in life is leeching off his parents, and the moment they die its over for him.

Online games today are all about fast-paced competitive PvP, something that MMORPG players don't want in their games.
Also the best MMORPGs you can play right now are really old games. Nobody wants to be late to the party.

I played L2 back then, and it was just another way to socialize. You had MSN for people you knew irl, forums, IRC, and MMOs. You'd just use it to talk/chat while grinding. I actually had fun talking with strangers.

The difference is that they won't have private servers for all the mobile gachashit. Not only there's no server files or reverse engineering projects, the clients eventually won't work on newer mobile systems and there's no compatibility modes.

Do zoomers even play on PC? Do they even know how to set up a private server? I always saw the average zoomer as someone playing Fortnite and COD Warzone on PS5.

The only MMO that ever actually felt good to play to me was Blade and Soul. Skills were responsive (more than FFXIV and WoW at least) instead of queued animations and it made it actually feel like playing a game.
I've tried to get into WoW numerous times and just get so fucking bored every single time.
