It was a generational degradation of video games. Like God of War or The Last of Us. A walking sim that contributed to the casualization of games and inspired legions of copycats trying to suck in scrubs through cinematics instead of through that big ugly G word. (Gameplay)
RPGs were meant to be like Zork or LoZ NES, where the player is required to use pen and paper (and wit) to overcome challenge and conquer the game world. Chrono Trigger has none of these aspects. But it has pretty graphics and good music so it sucks in the masses.
