They rushed the second half, plain and simple. First few levels felt carefully crafted, tight pacing, solid encounters-then it just turns into hallway simulator with repeated bosses and copy-pasted mobs. Felt like they had a vision but no time to actually finish the damn thing.
Anonymous No.718105662 [Report] >>718106021
Uninspired gameplay favoring gimmicks and forced "caravan" style gameplay over character variety. Objectively worse writing. Uninspired antagonist and story. Gimmicky 3D aesthetics instead of kino 2D aesthetic.

Wayne June had amazing VO though. Music was ok, but not as memorable as DD1.
Anonymous No.718105763 [Report] >>718106084
nothing? way more challenging game, boss and enemy encounters require constant thought on your positioning and moves you can do in said position, relationships and trinkets and other boons can exponentially increase DPS and tankiness, which you absolutely need by the endboss.

its just not the same kind of game as DD1, which is more of a long term character manager, DD2 is more about individual combat encounters.

the Eyes, Lungs and FInal Boss are some of the best turn based encounters I've had in a while, especially since at the Final Boss, I did the math of the last few turns I had left and it was absolutely garunteed loss.. till Reynauld triggered a relationship boon on Dismas

irrelevent, enemies actually do things in this game.

in DD1, you can stunlock the vast majority of enemies, even post stun nerf.

Alright, sure, I agree. But overall DD2 is easily better. The progression system in DD1 sucks balls.

in terms of unique content, DD2 is way better, DD1's combat is a snooze fest, your GODS and can stunlock everything easily.

the Prot and Stun resist buffs you can have on your tank characters trivialize damage in DD1, in DD2 the best you can hope for is limited tokens of Protection which last as many hits as you can apply tokens.

DD1 is comically easy once the trinkets start flowing, your tanks become unkillable and your DPS can start wave clearing the first 3 ranks in a single move.
Anonymous No.718106843 [Report]
Nothing. Its better than 1.

only with limited use combat tokens and getting lucky with good trinkets, which require going to high risk high reward areas on the branching paths.

you have to chart out and pay with for your rewards one way or another in DD2.

in DD1, you just ACCRUE them, and the advantages are forever.

having like 50% prot or higher on a Man at Arms is a path to pure easy street for instance.

just get a new VO, Wayne June's final lines were great, go out on a high note for him.

I like that DD2 is an inverse DD1 in terms of plot and thematics, this one goes over all the failings of the cast, and casts you in the darkest depths of bleak impossiblity, but demands you find the hope in the nothing, very Sisyphean.

where as the first one was like a fading sunset, always hope on the horizon, always to be crushed.

its way more put together than DD1, though DD1 has more charm.

DD2 is actual game with depth and difficulty, DD1 is an easily solvable snooze fest.

the moment you grasp the systems in DD1 and have the trinkets, you can blitz through the game, nothing can conceivably stop you.
Anonymous No.718108649 [Report] >>718108705
Nothing. The actual gameplay is way better, the art design is better, and the adventure mode is great. Main criticism would have to be that it took too long to get to this point, but the game has surpassed DD1. By the by, anybody disagreeing with the gameplay being better either cheated the first game, can't into strategy, or hasn't bothered with the career paths/reworks. Probably all three

Anonymous No.718108871 [Report]
>>718108705
how so? in DD1 enemy variety comes down entirely to what they are weak against and which individual enemy is more likely to disease you.

in DD2, those same tribes have whole mechanics and themes on top of that, such as the Meat Field fuckers all eating each other for power ups.

He means the amorous random dice roll relationship. It's a non-issue, though I think the entire system is kind of lacking. Not much of a step up from afflictions in the first game, but I like how it can affect buffs and interactions on the map or in combat

It had a very rough launch on EGS which soured a lot of people's perception of the game. I think the game looks great and I really enjoy the token combat rather than whiffing a 95% chance to hit. However, it never quite hit a sweet spot with the weird meta progression. I kind of enjoy Kingdoms, but it honestly takes TOO long to complete. I just get tired by escalation 3. I wish there had been some kind of merger of the Kingdoms and Confessions game modes so you could do one mega campaign.

I’m getting close to the 200-hour mark and my only real complaint is that it sucks for the first few hours when you don’t have anything unlocked. Some characters like Flagellant are completely worthless before you do their shrines. Otherwise, it’s a great game and almost as good as the first.

I don't know how you can pretend the chibi artstyle is better.

However, I WILL say I like the darker atmosphere and cultist designs in 1. I wish we had some more stuff like that rather than the more "monster" designs we had in 2. I still think everything looks good though.

look I hate jeets, troons and general costal elite bullshit, but I don't care that for a few rounds Dismas wants to fucking Reynault if he gives him extra turns and crit buffs.

I finally gave it a chance and played it, it's actually better than DD1 in many ways, like combat, graphics (yeah the 3d models makes it impossible to mod but they're very good) and team building variety but DD1 felt more memorable thanks to the better music, quotes and atmosphere.
The biggest problem with DD2 is the lack of dungeons, the stagecoach isn't so bad but... Thematically doesn't make sense and i'm fucking tired of slay the spire "inspired" progression.

Yeah but if they just made that your guys need to carry it on foot by passing though dungeons to explore it would have been better. It's not a big deal but they really should have thought how to make dungeon delving fun instead of taking slay the spire's progression (which i admit, works) and calling it a day.

I think the only thing that went wrong was having it be epic games exclusive for as long as it was, this meant far less of an active community, and way less of a transition over to the game, less mods, etc.

Nothing. They did what good developers do.
They explored the entirety of what could be done with the Darkest Dungeon 1 formula so for the sequel they tried something new.
Developers should always be trying new things. If they don't work out that is fine.
New is always preferable to the same thing over and over.
