Skill Based Matchmaking is bad. Being punished for playing good sucks.

If you're playing good then SBMM won't punish you.

should explain why most people don't want to play with you

If being good means being on a discord call with your friends while you play against randoms, you're not good.

Listen to my tale about how the lack of skillbased matchmaking killed a potentially popular video game franchise in the cradle.

>Early 2016, battle royales are an untested genre but Hunger Games is really popular
>The Culling goes into early access and attracts tens of thousands of players
>Highly skill based game. Guns are a rarity, so combat is mostly melee
>Lack of safe ways to kill better players means that better players will always win matches over the unskilled
>People with over 200 hours in the game regularly beat new players with katanas to death with their bare fists since the skill gap is that huge
>New players quit after a couple of matches because they keep getting clobbered
>Playerbase craters
>PUBG releases in the West, quickly picks up steam
>Devs still refuse to add SBMM
>Instead, they plop out the game and work on a sequel that's more like the newly popular PUBG
>That also fails and the company goes under, killing the first game and leaving the ~300 remaining players without any way to play the game

Remember kids, skillbased matchmaking won't save your game, but it'll stop new players from quitting in frustration.

Being paired against players of similar skill is good.

Being put in matches you are meant to lose to maintain a 50/50 win rate is bad.

If you're playing good then you should be able to play against players who are also playing good. Stomping matches sucks for everyone involved but you apparently.

EOMM would basically be SBMM but with more of a Skinner box and addictive element. The idea is to make it so when you lose too much you'll be given a match where you should stomp the opponents if possible to give you an ego boost and keep you playing for longer
Anonymous No.718110378

SBMM is supposed to be strictly skill based, the more you win, the better the opponents you play against until you settle playing people around your skill level consistently. Think ELO.
EOMM is optimized for just that engagement. When people talk about "forced 50/50s" that's what they're talking about. In order to optimize 'engagement' the game will throw you in mismatched teams to force a win or a less depending on what the algorithm decides is better for keeping you playing.

The wrinkles come into play when it's a team game. Is every team the same skill level? Or are some high ranked players carrying shitter players?
Now I won't pretend to know what goes into matchmaking in any given game because I don't like to play rankslop, but I wouldn't be surprised if games that claim to have SBMM actually have EOMM.

Sbmm only works in 1v1 games
Getting an individual rank in a team game is retarded and allows for too much fuckery

Depends on the game.
>>718106168
>>718108716
The thing is many games don't base their matchmaking off of individual players but an overall team skill level. You often will not be placed against players of your skill level, but a team of players moderately worse than you, with the match being considered 'balanced' because the players on your team are significantly worse than both you and the other team.

I started playing Wildgate recently and that game has no real matchmaking system and the flaws in that are instantly apparent
>high rank players immediately leave matches when teamed with low rank ones, which prompts the rest of that team to leave as well, happens often enough that almost every match is down a whole team by the time everyone loads in
>groups of friends get put up against groups of randoms and steamroll them
>new players get yelled at for throwing and mercilessly slaughtered before they can learn the mechanics of the game
It's a shame because the game is pretty fun but the lack of matchmaking and the frankly too high price for that style of game basically killed it before it could get off the ground.
