Beyond All Reason
I was searching for an RTS worth learning to play in current year +3, and this showed up. I've never heard of it before, has anybody else tried it?

seems like it's inspired by Total Annihilation, and you can have teams of 40v40?

I don't know if this game will be competitive, but it seemed interesting enough.

this was the other game I was looking at, that isn't some legacy game like sc2 wc3 aoe2, but it seems like it's being received very negatively by the community.
Anonymous No.718110428
not sure if they're good because i don't really play the genre, but broken arrow came out somewhat recently as did coh3. keep in mind that aoe2 still has a decently sized community and is still getting dlc and updates. also, dawn of war 1 definitive edition came out today as well, so that might have some players.

I've never heard of more than like 8 players in an RTS match before, that's pretty cool. but if the map can support that many players it definitely doesn't seem like it'll be a traditional 1v1 2v2 1v1v1v1 RTS.

I really dislike the focus on competitive multiplayer that all modern RTS games go for
I love Supcom/FA and I'd play way more BAR if it had a campaign and co-op stuff or Warcraft 3 tier map/script editing, but everything is just sweaty pvp stuff

BAR has two coop modes and several rules to make it a party game if you want, as well as Mission challenges

Ackytually 1v1 and FFA are popular in the high elo lobbies. The overwhelming majority of players do 8v8 and games with more than that are not ranked and usually set up for streamers doing stupid big matches for their viewers.
t. BAR addict.

Waiting on the Steam release and 3rd faction, then I'll play
I really like the way TA and Supreme Commander handle resources, it's a shame Supcom 2 was so awful that it killed Gas Powered Games

Once you're playing you will notice the roles of each one and why there are so many options
There are many many ways to play and many tactics, for every kind of map or terrain
1v1 or 4v4 is vastly different from 8v8, but there are so many tools that just werks as a sandbox

Why bother it's just discount supcom. The only problem with faf is that the people who still play it have extreme autism and refuse to play with new players since games can't be balanced exactly perfectly. It's like bro there's 15 people worldwide still playing this 20 year old game. And they know each other so well they also refuse to be on the same team and basically it's better to just play with ai

it's okay. just try to have a good start and never stop spending your money (and don't overspend and stall your production) and you should be fine and do better than most other players that don't do that

i uninstalled because i had to interact with a few mouthbreathers

BAR is getting huge for a reason tho. It is impressive for an RTS with the enormous QoL features that it has, the ease of controlling units on it, and that it runs on anything at peak performance

Long story short
Spring Engine is an ancient RTS engine that spawned several projects, one of them was a remake of Total Annihilation in this engine, with balanced changes, called Balanced Annihilation Reloaded (BAR). The project got track and started to do its own thing, and they changed the name to Beyond All Reason. Now the Spring Engine fork is called Recoil and has a lot of improvements all in OpenGL

Zero-K is a fork of the Spring Engine and its also its own thing. Its based on Total Annihilation but not quite, has its own QoL and is drastically different. Playing them both, BAR is the much more polished and known project but ZK is free as well on Steam and some people like its differences. If you're an RTS lover just give them both a go.

It's literally just TA, many of the units and buildings are pulled straight from the game. Wish they'd get the single player properly rolling though, it's not even that hard to do something like TA's campaign where it's just a series of skirmish maps.

Zero-K is ugly as fuck tho. I think that's the reason why it hasn't had an impact like BAR, which had lots of glow ups that complement the gameplay
I mean ZK has terrain deformation on or at least much more pronounced than BAR and the units have a slight AI that controls their movements with certain projectile dodging and things like that. They have different philosophy design and may look very similar but the scope and gameplay is very different. I wish they did made it more appealing. Doesn't need to be BAR levels of cool explosions or lightning engine but at least not butt ugly. Reminds me of Dark Reign but in 2025
