Cortana from 4 kept the design aesthetic but then added things like modern mo-cap, insane high res details and other such things. And then on top of that, the character in the game was just more clingy and emotional due to the story she was going through.

I wonder what people they hired to work on halo 3 that weren’t there for halo 2 because they definitely fucked with the vibe and tone of the game and Cortana is one of the most obvious examples. One of the reasons I have only played halo 3d campaign like twice but I have played halo 1 and 2 like 50 times is because of how annoying Cortana is in sections of that game it just felt like the type of story they were going for and the audience they were trying to impress had changed between 2 and 3. I feel like they had some sort of weird influence to make a movie game or something. it’s still a good game but I just don’t like it that much compared to the first 2.

It just lacked a lot of the magic or intrigue or inspiration of the first 2 games and I would argue much of it feels contrived like the melodramatic Cortana shit. halo 1 starts off strong on that cool ship with tense corridor fighting before you land on the awesome looking halo ring. Halo 2 starts off on Cairo station which imo is one of the coolest areas in a halo game aesthetically they just nailed it. it’s an amazing level one of my favorites. Even stuff like the floor textures look cool. Or looking out into space. the zero g section. the boarding parties fighting you in those hangars.

Halo 3 just starts off weird and lame off the bat where you don’t know why masterchief is falling from space. (Supposedly answered in a comic book?) then he lands in the jungle and somehow doesnt die because of some gay gel shit which never would have protected his brain.

You get up and you are in some shitty generic fucking forest level just fucking around for a half hour. Terrible way to start the game right out of the gate. Also everything being so shiny with bloom also killed a lot of the atmosphere in it as well where it felt like a Pixar game to me. I like the multiplayer though and the spartan designs from the game.

By Halo 3, it was a new team of 100 people (too much) and those shitters were lazy and didn't have the creative spirit of the CE and 2 small Bungie team. This is why Bungie didn't bring back most of those cut Halo CE and 2 ideas. The new team also didn't want to make Halo games for some reason. You get a sense that whatever protocol might have been, regarding interaction with AI ship-soft, it's become highly relaxed as the realities of the war set in, and everyone realizes just how much they rely on their AI crew members.

It predates, and reaches beyond, the quippy Joss Whedon era Marvel-shit writing style of never taking anything seriously. The levity in the writing isn't tastelessly inserted into serious moments.

I think the Didact and librarian parts of the terminals really should have been less cut and dry. I hate the fact that they are apparently verbatim quotations of real conversations that actually happened. The discussions are of such short length that they stretch imagination a bit too far. I also somewhat dislike the idea of there just being this married couple just skyping over lightyears of space about these monumental events. Yeah, exactly. Again, I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert at Halo. To me it's just a scifi fantasy universe I simply haven't spent time delving into past playing the games. But in my opinion the Bungie games were made in a time where words like "rad" or "badass" weren't used as cringeworthy layers of irony, instead media was allowed to embrace them and have them as a badge of honor in full glory. So what if it was just an okay story that it's used as a vehicle for "hype" and "epic" moments, if those moments and characters are fun cool and memorable? Because they are. In halo 4's cortana's entire facial structure is different from prior games, and she kinda just looks like a thicc bimbo. In terms of writing I think 4 and 5 both are mid at best, but Halo 4 has what are good ideas in concept mostly executed badly, wheras Halo 5 has bad ideas that have pretty good execution (except for Locke who is sort of both bad and good in concept but bad in execution), and this applies to Cortana, too: The plot setup in 4 of Chief and an increasingly Rampant Cortana trapped alone on an alien forerunner world is a great hook, but in practice chief acts like he's dumb and doesn't understand the gravity of the situation or what rampancy is, and Cortana acts like a demure damsel, with both being very out of character, and rampancy is just shown as cringy tantrums (none of which landed even half as well as the Cortana visions in 3) rather then an AI gradually becoming unstable and more controlling, violent, etc over time without them realizing it. The UNSC showing up again also ruins the atmosphere

Halo 5 never should have revived her, but both Chief and Cortana actually act how they should: Chief tries to save her but is clearly in a position of knowing what he has to do if he can't, and Cortana not even realizing what's wrong with her and wanting to trap chief to keep him safe, with rampancy exaggebrating her existing overprotective and sassy personality traits into something toxic is pretty much how she should have acted in 4.

Keep (pre-)CE aesthetics consistent throughout the games. The tone can change as the story progresses, but designs generally shouldn't.
Mix in some gameplay elements of classic shooters like Unreal or Quake, but keep vehicles highly advantageous and Chief feeling like a walking tank. A little extra movement speed (not sprinting) and increasing the weapon limit to 4 could freshen things up without making things too different. Powerups should appear throughout the games.
Keep the covenant and their motives mysterious for longer. When eventually revealing them, do so from humanity's perspective instead of doing the whole sudden Arbiter thing. This allows room for speculation and misinterpretations which can be interesting.
Focus on a mix of exploring Forerunner facilities (mostly on Halos, obviously) for technological advantages, and trying to set back the Covenant with strategic battles.
Don't do anything with the Chief after a 3rd game. Spinoffs should generally not interact with the main story. No books or other multi-media nonsense for lorefags to get out of shape over.
