because FPS games are only good when the level design and resource distribution is very carefully designed. introduce an open world and you get shit like procedural generation or random spawning to fill space

Not OP but what is out there even that isn't far cry? And maybe STALKER but I would say that stalker is less of a good fps gameplay-wise but makes up for it in atmosphere and other elements of the experience.

When approaching it as a ~Far Cry game and a scaffolding for modding efforts- it's one of the best games from the past decade.

It takes just a few mods (bullet time, improved stealth, enemy patrols and variety, ambushes) to greatly elevate the gunplay & exploration.
Then add ~120 weapons and you're ready to go.
