Is there ONE fucking current MMORPG that's not utter trash? This genre of vidya has been nothing but disappointment after disappointment for the past 15+ years

All mmorpg's are trash. They've always been bad. The gameplay is not at all engaging, the lore in every single one of them sucks, and the communities are all toxic. No mmorpg has ever been good.

I played a mmo but looking at it in hindsight it was a grindfest. It really isn't good.

Old School Runescape. Pretty sure as of recent its officially taken the throne of the most popular mmo on the market today, because it is quite good.

it is nowhere near the top. wow is still the king by a significant margin.
>200k players with all the wow grifters playing it
LMAO! classic wow alone clears that.

WoW peaked so hard that it ruined the genre forever as everyone scrambled to copy it

The only thing that can save MMOs is Star Citizen delivering (LOL) or advancements in VR + it becoming widely adopted (LMAO). Current server infrastructure only allows for tab target slop or telegraphed attacks that has been done to death. You probably also have some nostalgia from when you were a kid and could dump a fuckload of time into an MMO, while also not feeling like it was a complete waste. The prevalence of minmax faggots and dataminers is the final nail in the coffin for this genre.

I still think wow is probably the best overall mmo. XIV has an extremely bad endgame, GW2 is a similar story, and OSRS is too grindy for most people.

They are retarded but I guess they were trying to say that they removed a lot of the depth and replace it with skill checks
So you have tbc, a pretty obtuse game with low skill floor and ceiling
And modern retail, a pretty simple game with high skill floor and ceiling

>the laws of physics would need to be broken to make something better
Yeah pretty much. And if it did woopty fucking doo, you beat a record from like 15 years ago and most likely will not be able to have a fraction of the staying power. Even if you boiled down "better" to an mmo with a paid sub in similar price achieving more concurrent players than wow at it's peak I don't think it'll happen still, the interest is gone on both sides of the fence. If the so called savior of mmos, ashes of creation actually delivered on everything and wasn't a blatant scam. yeah it all sounds really awesome, but the idea that it's so dependent upon constant interlocking player interaction, player driven this and that, that it wouldnt be able to pull consistent numbers to achieve that long term before the locust swarm went back to their main games. I'm playing classic anni now and if anyone thinks vanilla is/was a timesink but looking forward to ashes, just lol.

WoW had shitty design philosophy and was the worst thing to happen to MMOs and popularized nearly every bad idea in modern MMO gaming.

>Grind to end game where all the content is
>Constant raids at end game for gear
>Quests are majority busy work kill x amount collect y amount
>Theme park world design
>Autism skill cycle
>Combat is the only fleshed out part
>Tryhard pvp that encourages smurfing

Early RS and even games like Mabinogi were leagues better in philosophy. Even MapleStory 2 offered more (and utterly fucked itself by making progress too fast and turning into WoW but at least there was plenty more than just grind to the end). RS gave you lots of things to do at every level, the quests were solid and unique, the skills offered lots of ways to engage with the game, and the world actually felt more "normal" instead of like a pure theme park.

Everything trying to copy WoW killed the MMO genre because it's philosophy is retarded, those that didn't, did better.

While I agree that the genre hasn't had any good additions in over a decade, there are some other factors why the genre doesn't feel the same anymore. For one thing, being able to play in a massive, persistent world with hundreds of other players used to be a genuine novelty. These days, there are Minecraft servers that have more players than classic WoW servers ever did.

Whatever I enjoyed about MMOs I can now enjoy in other games without any of the commitments, the awful MMO community or without paying a subscription. Them rolling out classic WoW and it being a complete shitfest just confirms that it was a cultural phenomenon unique to the 2000s zeitgeist.

WoW itself was the casuals mmo and was never a really difficult game. WoW became shit because blizzard threw away their characters and flanderized their world, making it gay and lame in the process. the massive content droughts didn’t help either

Well, I like Ragnarok Online. Good aesthetic, great music, and the best build customization options in a MMO that I've ever seen.

However, some downsides:
>too grindy
>can be pay-to-win, depending on the server.

It was dogshit because they tried to copy WoW
2 factions in a pvp focused game is a recipe for disaster. You either go 3 ala Planetside and Dark Age of Camelot, or you go FFA/build your own side ala EVE Online. 2 faction is a recipe for steamrolls and bordom

TERA could have been the pinnacle of MMOs if it wasnt a Korean game. Then again, Elins could never have been designed by anyone outside of east asia....

I want to say OSRS but Reddit has too much control over what is added to the game and the devs broke their promise long ago of not adding unpolled content
If you can ignore that and just play Ironman mode so you aren't worried about gpscape then OSRS is STILL decent.

Runescape itself peaked in 2009-11.

Felt like they finally entered the 2.5D era, pk'ing & bridding was more nuanced.

We used to have this.
It was called Asheron's Call.
It used to take days to travel from the South of the island to the North without the use of portals.
Every part of the map had a use.
Every mob had a purpose and a drop table.
Never again will I farm Pyreal Fragments on the shore while praying for rare spawns.
Never again will an MMO require me to keep a stock of spellcasting materials to actually cast spells with.
Never again will I offer someone 500 pyreals and a red taper, and that's my final offer.

Newly launching MMORPGs are doomed for failure now, it's been that way for a long time now. MMOfags might try out something new for a bit but then get bored and ultimately decide to go back to their old MMO. And now no publisher/developer wants to risk putting money into making something nobody will be playing in a year.
Also the old big MMOs are slowly dying out and not replacing their playerbase with new players fast enough. The only MMO that's actually growing is OSRS because they adapted to the times well and made a competent mobile client, which is where the zoomers are at.
