About to start this up. What am I in for?

It's a good game, just not as good as New Vegas. I never understood how people could simultaneously deepthroat NV while acting like 3 was shit. The writing / characters aren't as good, and even stupid at times, but the gameplay is pretty much the same and its arguably better in terms of exploration. New Vegas has nothing like the metro tunnels.

But there is a railway tunnel filled with feral ghouls and mines in New Vegas. It just doesn't stand out because it's not a mandatory part of getting from point A to point B.

A great game

It's pretty alright and dare I say, fun
You might want to follow the main questline sooner rather than later because if you have the DLC that adds a new enemy, they get spawned in a lot

Some locations can be missed very easily like Necrop- I mean Underworld, though there's not much to be missed if you don't go there

There's some weird quest programming that's a bit unfinished, so I'd recommend saving regularly
The wiki is... mostly... complete on explaning both bugs and intended behaviour
Morality in game is a little weird
The vampire quest springs to mind, not completing it the way the writer wants you to was an afterthought, and you get good karma for letting a bunch of rejects terrorise the wasteland, and you don't resolve an incurable head injury that will get someone killed later. It's simply a morality check on "Do you support queers?" and not "Do you support coercive behaviour, indoctrination, degeneracy, danger, murder and cannibalism?", if it was the latter it would raise questions like why can't you side with the villain of the game.

Do people actually like the tunnels? They always felt copy pasted and boring to me. I'd much rather install a mod to add dozens of new locations (like I did in NV)

Standard Bethesda open world but with guns, so a strong emphasis on interactivity, chaos from interconnecting systems, backstory and exploration, and a poorly thought out plot and shallow characters.

One of the worst most boringest intros to a game ever, then 2 hours of some of the most fun you will have exploring in a video game, then quitting once you realize it is in service of nothing and you're just wasting time playing this video game.

It's in service of finding the badass side quests and locations that are actually interesting and varied.
Unlike Troon Vegays where most of the locations are NCR hovels where you can help the NCR AGAIN

A pretty fun open-world RPG that isn't immensely memorable. It's also meant to catch up new audiences (which at the time of release was pretty much everybody, despite most of /v/ larping as old school boomers) with the lore, something it does reasonably well enough despite some serious missteps (looking at you, BoS).

The character building options in 3 mostly suck is it's biggest pratfall compared to NV, and the weapon balancing is ass which further limits character expression.
>perks are mostly 'number go up' and otherwise don't really do anything

>the aggressively tiered level lists mean there's very little variety by locale and the higher tiers especially tend to be badly balanced

I like a lot about Fallout 3's map but Bethesda really screwed the pooch on the RPG aspect of the game.

Luckily you can just fix this these days by using Tale of Two Wastelands and backfill in a lot of Obsidian's improvements. Fallout 3 with a full crafting system is honestly super nice.

The thing that's actually nice about the tunnels is that they make DC feel big, since it's sectioned off into a bunch of cells, which is something Fallout 4 failed pretty hard at imo. I've always felt like Boston felt really small but even revisiting 3 earlier this year DC feels like a proper city.

Probably the most kino game of its time
It's definitely better than most of them from the PS3 era and even the ps4 era

Just rotate saves, so keep like 3-4 saves and save every 10-15 minutes.
If you're on PC you can look at a mod or two but they're not really needed

Go to Megaton, be helpful to Moira, there's level scaling but it's not crazy. Do the Mothership Zeta around level 6-8, not after level 10 IIRC as the aliens get bufed up quite a bit

You'll either love or hate the underground tunnels. I loved them. I'd max speech, lockpicking and science first then decide what gun you want. Big guns are fun but scare ammo early on. Explosives are meme in 3. Melee is fine but unarmed not so much. Also if you get fucked on, use VATS, you take way less damage in it.

Most characters don't have any character building besides "mai wife/kid/brahmin dead, pls fix ;_;", even the main antagonist for half the game, Benny's, entire complexity boils down to "waow I'm so surprised you're here, anyway let's bang so you can kill me or I'll run away, your choice!" and then he's never seen again. The ONLY thing I can grant NV is that Bitter Springs has some interesting lore but that's about it.

I think you misunderstood my post, anon. I said the options the player has for constructing their character in Fallout 3 are bad. I didn't comment on story at all.

And yeah the character building options in New Vegas are way better.

If you isolate most stories from NV and look at them in a vacuum, they fucking suck. But because it's in the le ebin Fisto game with the lesbian and influencerman told me it's great, the stories are all 10/10s and you cannot do better

Just take the time to install TTW, your game will run a lot better, be more stable and you can play both 3 and nv in the same game.
