Is a RP5 still a good idea in August 2025? Or should I wait for a possible 6 announcement? I live in Canada so I'm thinking a refurbished RP5 will cost me around 250ish maple bucks.

anything more powerful than the RP5 is specifically for switch games, wii u games and window PC game emulation. Everything else runs smoothly right now but if you value those three platforms the most, then you should wait until they announce a snapdragon 8 gen 3 device in the future.

I'd get a Flip 2 if it actually had 2 screens. The way it is now it's like an oversize GBA SP and not in a good way.

Couple things. The controller layout for one, I really don't like the way it is now because the sticks aren't diagonal to the D-pad/face buttons but instead directly below them which will probably make me touch the camera stick during A/X buttons or D-pad up while I'm moving down on the control stick. Just that layout is very obstructive I feel but if you have experience with it I could have my mind changed.

I don't know why they all get so hot after a while of using them. They're unbearable for me. I'm thinking the plastic controller shell will completely shield my hands away from it. Idk if anyone here has an RP5 and can let me know if the thing gets hot but I'm speculating that the heat probably centers on the very center back of the device and nowhere near the controllers since that's where the all the vents and fan are housed.

since it's chinkware, i assume you can't return the RP5 if you don't like it? since heat matters, it might be worth it to go through a store where you can return it even if you have to pay a premium.

I've bought the RP5 a few months ago and unlike most retro fags I actually play games on it
>the D-Pad is amazing because it's basically the Vita D-Pad and it's in the right place
>makes playing platformers on this thing pure sex
>the rest of the buttons are also very good
>playing games that make heavy use of the sticks (like Armored Core with dual analog mod) requires you to grip it in a way that makes using L2 and R2 difficult
>the official grip case thing however makes a massive difference and completely eliminates the issue
>the OLED display is as good as they say and the resolution is high enough you don't need integer scaling most of the time and it's not just *an* OLED, it's a pretty good panel
>the fan is very quiet even when playing PS2 games at 2-3x res
>all the retro consoles on it are a breeze through retroarch, you can use proper accurate emulators like bsnes and beetle psx and saturn instead of the gay inaccurate shit, most GCN and PS2 games run perfectly fine but there are some like VP2 Silmeria that the S865 is just not powerful enough to emulate and there's nothing you can do about it
>everyone telling you Switch emulation is fine is a liar, they only ever test 1-5 popular games and everything else runs like shit and the emulator likes to randomly crash even when just switching apps or locking the screen, yes I was using the current best turnip driver
>DS and 3DS emulation sucks because the display is too small to accommodate two screens so forget about them unless you want to buy the dual screen attachment that released today
>Rocknix is broken and I don't recommend it at all because it has issues with screen refresh rate, it's juddery and some games stutter despite being able to run at like 500% when sped up without a hitch
>retro fags are blind and don't play games anyway so they probably never noticed it but it's objectively there (I looked at frametime graphs they are ROUGH)

A RP6 will probably end up being more expensive so you gotta consider if its worth it and what games you would even want to cover with it.
If you just want to play up to and including PS2/Wii then the RP5 will suit you well.

Check out Retrogamecorps's android setup guide but basically, get retroarch, set it up and as far as frontends go, ES-DE is the better one, it's not free but the apk can be found pretty easily. Retroarch will be fine for most emulators but for N64/Ps1 and beyond, standalone emulators are prefered. To make this easier, look up for an app called Obtanium and search for the emulation pack at github. With a mini you should be able to play most GC/Wii and Ps2 games, maybe some WiiU and Switch games as well.

It took me a while to find a solution and ended up finding the answer on a Facebook post of all things. By the way, I just want to throw a random tip about ES-DE in case you haven't set it up. If you want to scrape your games to get the box arts and all that, before you do so, make sure to exclude useless stuff like manuals and fan art, those options can be found under content settings in the scrape menu, also, you have a daily limit but it resets at 4pm every day.

Can't speak for chinkhelds specifically when it comes to modern touchscreens and using a stylus, but I've owned tons of those stylus fucks for my phones and tablets over the years and there's absolutely no fuckin' way you're playing something like Meteos comfortably.
Most modern styluses have to rely on a decently large "cloth" pad at the tip with about the same contact size as a pinky tip, sometimes a bit smaller, definitely not a "point", since phone screens aren't designed for anything but fingers.

>use a handheld twice as powerful but with no Portmaster support
>same game runs at 1/4 the FPS somehow

Also, the based way to handle chinkhelds is to categorize them and only own one of each category, max.
1. Easily pocketable with no effort, small, cheap, plays up to (or including) PS1. Sticks and L2/R2 optional. Mainly for SNES or earlier. Passively cooled.
2. Plays up to and including PS2 (and 2D Switch games), probably costs around $200. Solid construction, pocketable in bigger pockets, has a cooling fan.
3. Deck-like. Plays Switch games or better, probably has a desktop OS. Requires a bulky charger, probably needs a standalone bag/case, runs legit Steam and plays legit Steam games.

not, it doesn't. I have an original r36s which uses the same chip and dreamcast and psp games are laggy. They are great for the price if you enjoy playing retro games till the psx era.
