What happened to the platform genre?

For all of the great things Gen 6 did, it really shit the bed with platformers and they never really recovered.

I think it's a philosophy difference, someone once said "why make a game that sells a couple million when you have games that sell triple that?"

Also how is Metroid not a platformer? It revolutionised the genre and is the namesake for an entire subgenre of platforming.
