VR was to expensive. I managed to get in on the PS4, and it really is one of those things that has to be experienced to be appreciated. The cost of entry is too high for most people to even try.

Even on the PS4 VR is a blast, and I was not ready for how it would affect me.

>No way to do marketing for it, the only way to actually show it is just straight up trying for yourself
>Impossible to show in a TV show without making it look dumb
>The game industry finally crashed in 2011 after 10 years of trying to follow the meme of home consoles
>Facebook blocked the Linux release of the CV1, so there was no momentum for developing VR apps or desktops
>Facebook started the paradigm of walled gardens, closely aligning the emerging VR market with the cancer that is the smartphone market, ensuring that early VR had no way to gain momentum, since it would frequently be split between the Faceberg store and PSVR
>Facebook started acquiring devs and trying (and failing to compete) with fucking Second Life and VRchat, so no one interested in working on VR in exchange for remuneration did anything productive in the last 10 years
>Facebook permanently smeared the shitstain of Horizon worlds on their headsets, ensuring that most people's first experience with the Quest is some awful fusion of mid-2000s avatars, so no one is really interested in what these things can do graphically
>Facebook's bizarre attempt to tether VR to business slop has retarded any development
>Facebook tying their entire image to a failed NFT real-estate scam made everyone lose confidence in anything other that cheap scams
>Facebook tied their headsets even closer to shartphones by tying the compute unit to the headset and making it locked down ARMslop

VR is only somewhat recovering now that no one is seriously entertaining all of the bullshit of the 2010s, but it was still held back for 10 years.

Will we be all fucking ONLY robots in the future instead of each other?
Surely, once the technology progresses enough, our stupid silly organic meat parts won't be able to reach even 1% of the effectiveness and power of a machine that can be made and programmed to near perfection and that can learn and self correct.

Shoddy quest 3 hardware failing constantly
Anonymous No.718138264 >>718140045
>>718136804
And this is only one part of the VR failures from the marketing side. Hardware design-wise VR developers have completely missed the point by making VR a physical activity, VR is not AR, you are supposed to be fucking stationary while using it. The motion controllers and body tracking cameras have done tremendous damage to the image of VR by going down a misdirected technological path. VR should be played with a BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) no matter how primitive or finicky the device would be. Software-wise most developers don't have a fucking clue on how to make games for it, not even making god games which would have at least made sense for those stupid motion controllers.

I've tried these kind of things multiple times, they're too noisy and don't go fast enough for my deathgrip abused dick, half the time I go flaccid while I try and load up the next video file.

Scripts are either, fast enough to chafe and turn my dick numb before I cum, or too slow that I go soft. I've found very few videos that are in the happy middle ground, and finding them is a chore because you have to deal with the other 2 categories to check for them.

I want to buy a vacuum system at some point, because then at least you can't go flaccid.

It is impossible for a toy vagina to feel better than the real thing, because even if this sex toy has extra features that stimulate your penis aggressively it will always remain just a machine. Having sex isn't just about your penis being gripped tightly by a woman's pussy, it's the act of you putting your penis into a woman that is not replicable with a toy. That is the hottest part of sex. It's grabbing a woman by hair waist and pounding her hard.

No, fuck off, it's a monitor replacement with head tracking.
While I agree that the motion controls are completely overblown for marketing purposes (just like with the Wii), you don't need some jank BCI to make VR worthwhile.
Motion controllers are also a notable step up from the complete ass that has been the mainstream console controller market since 6th gen and they are generally capable of delivering a good experience even for flat gaming.
> Software-wise most developers don't have a fucking clue on how to make games for it
It's honestly ridiculous how rare official VR conversions are, since most games being released now are on generic engines with VR support and games are unable to offer particularly fast movement anyway due to being so heavily designed for the lowest common denominator dual analog control scheme.

It's not about VR being worthwhile or not right now, it's about setting a standard so technology like BCI that will pair together with VR headsets has monetary reasons in place to get incremental improvements and more funds to accelerate research. The future of VR is going to be with BCIs, If the VR companies integrated something like EEG tech into the VR headsets we would have a much different VR scene and software now, better in my opinion.

Did Zuckerberg see the Lawnmower Man as a kid and dream up some fantasy about turning VR into a business facing venture?

Why did a guy with no prior interest in actual video games buy the Oculus and do the dumbest shit in the world with it? It didn't have to go that way, it really didn't. It feels so strange that every time we have to explain why VR isn't a mainstream thing we have to mention a blank-eyed billionaire that owns a social media website.

$30b down the tubes on Meta. Insane. Zuck could have built a taller version of the Burj Khalifa, torn it down, then built it again and repeated the process 10 times with that kind of cash. It's funny, I think it's the exact opposite.

Racing games are more fun with a wheel, doesn't matter if they're sims or pure arcade, I would rather have FFB, it is more fun.

For shooting games? No, VR isn't an improvement. It's a poor middle ground between light guns, which were great but required games to be built entirely around them, and regular shooters with mouse and keyboard, which are also great but require good controls so you can bhop around and have fun. VR is in a weird middle point where you have crappy movement AND crappy shooting, it's the worst aspects of both genres. Only zoomers who have never played Time Crisis in the arcade like VR.

The solution isn't to tie VR to another form of jank. Early VR adopted motion controllers, not because they were tied to the headsets, but because decent motion controllers existed.
Just put together a decent API and add-on, having everything contained in one device is mental illness.

VR is a great concept.
The continued persistence of the current wave of VR from 2012 shows just how functional it is even as various other gimmicks like 3D displays have died off.

The problem is that this isn't fun. I get it, motion tracking, but there's no weight. It's shadow boxing with NPCs. Something like beat saber is a better choice for a form of play you can't get elsewhere, but I'm still not sold on zero-feedback motion controls. At best you can use it for guns, but then it's still worse than 70 year old tech.

what do you mean by zero feedback? The controllers vibrate, and stuff is happening visually. Most people don't have vibrating mouse and keyboard.

Unless you want your hand get physically stopped when touching something in VR. That would required a whole exoskeleton.

I did play some of the on rails shooting games at arcades and they all sucked. The middle ground is not weird at all, quake is not designed around VR, Into the Radius is. I don't know if I would want to bhop in VR, walking around at normal speed feels totally fine on the other hand. What I liked about these games in VR a lot is handling the gun, building muscle memory for reloading different guns is fun, picking up bullets, putting them into clips, putting different mods on the weapon - it's immersive and it's something you won't experience in arcades.

Nice auto-correct, retard.

I'm still waiting for police 911 to be playable at home. Sure, I can play it on my PS2, with a shit lightgun and the crappy camera, but it's not as good. If you've got the space for a massive projector screen and the money for those insanely overpriced gas guns, you could have a lot of fun at home, but that's never going to be a cheap enough solution for devs to make new games.

>>718142624
If I'm smashing my fists into things or swinging a sword around, I expect some level of feedback. VR offers none of that, which is why it's worthless for melee. I'd prefer to just use my mouse to draw slashes into the game, it's less effort and just as realistic.

>>718142702
I don't find reloading fun at all. There's a reason the arcades made it simple, because it's just pointless busywork. It's even worse when you're contending with virtual 3D objects and misalignment of controllers, if you'd ever done drills with a real gun you'd understand.

Shooting is fine, melee combat is where things get weird. When you hit another person's sword but obviously there's no resistance. Not sure how you'd implement that without an exoskeleton physically limiting your movement, which sounds dangerous.

B&S feels like absolute shit. Being better than some crappy implementations doesn't make it good.

I do, and I have fun LARPing. While sim racing is a reasonable approximation of driving a car (although you need a motion rig to feel most of the forces), VR is a weightless mockery of physical simulation.

Depends on the implementation, which is game by game. Plenty have it so when you grab a mag, it's oriented based on how your controller is currently oriented, so if you're off or something bugs out, it won't be in the right place when you bring it up to the well.

>>718143085
>what can we do better?
Nothing, that's the problem. The technology is flawed. It's like when I bring up that the FOVs are too low and the pixel density is sub 20/20 vision, but at least those have eventual solutions. Melee in VR isn't viable until full dive.

This argument is akin to saying "why play fighting games when you can do MMA IRL?". The mouse is good enough for melee, just like it's good enough for shooting.

The problem is when you act like this is a big leap forward instead of being a middle ground solution that's worse than what we already have in most cases, and not as good as what people want in the rest.

Let's take guns, because it's much easier to visualise. If I could play any shooter with either M&K, or a fictional control scheme consisting of direct brain input for things like movement, turning, and a gun in my hands for shooting, I would still pick M&K for most games. I don't want to run around Black Mesa IRL for the sake of immersion, I'm happy enough sitting in a chair and clicking on zombies.

What? No. It's akin to saying why ride a horse and wait for teleportation to be discovered when you could just be using a car. Sure it's not perfect, but it's better than a horse
>would still pick M&K for most games
Because most games are designed for M&K. I would not pick M&K for Alyx, that would ruin the game. I would not play Pistol Whip or Robo Recall with M&K because that would make zero sense.

The release of system sellers and games in general has slowed way down since the late 2000s. I struggle to name 5 good non-indies releasing for specific systems even with flat games.
>>718143652
VR would still have the advantage, because people are erroneously still stuck on the outdated and lame console controllers for everything.
Games can no longer be designed where interacting with an object can be more complex than hovering vaguely near it, because dual analog can't let the player look at specific things without inducing an aneurysm.
So in respect to what most people are using, it is a massive leap forward... or backward as the case may be.

Ultimately VR is a monitor replacement/complement, not a controller replacement, and while you could use M&KB for VR, it obviously becomes much more limited than motion control in a few key ways. You only have one cursor and only have 2DoF, rather than full 6DoF.

>I'm happy enough sitting in a chair and clicking on zombies.
Those grapes were too sour anyway. You like M&KB because it's a good abstraction, if you had a better abstraction, then you'd like that.

No, I just don't think it'd be very fun. The main issue I'm thinking about is the mismatch between turning and aiming, there's no good option. If you have to physically turn, the game becomes a chore. If you're doing it with your brain, your inner ear violently disagrees with you.

I'd totally use it from time to time, but it wouldn't replace classical controls. I love light gun games, but I don't want to play them for more than a couple of hours straight. I can play an FPS game all day, because a mouse has no fatigue, unlike aiming down a barrel all day.

I don't agree, I think there are fundamental limits to approaches.

I like light gun shooters, but I wouldn't want every FPS game to be a light gun shooter. Even if we had perfect VR screens that covered every inch of your FOV, I would still want to play games with a regular rectangular projection most of the time, because I don't always want full immersion.

If we're talking about controller replacement, I don't see anything improving on the current offerings until we have neural input so I can move a cursor around just by thinking about it. There's this idea that control surfaces have to improve, but then you look at the piano and realise that there comes a point where iteration doesn't actually lead to improvement, just difference.

Current VR implementations are nowhere near close to being capable of flat projection. The issue is PPD, VR has completely unusable PPD, and will continue until we get 8k per eye headsets. Even after that point, I'm not running 16k hardware for the sake of a 4k window.

>Do you not lift your arms just by thinking about it?
No, I have to move them. Movement that's fine for a few hours, but quickly becomes fatiguing past that point, which is why most people use controllers in their lap and M&K on their desks, instead of holding their hands in line with their head all day.
