Why has it failed? It had thousands of players on launch, now it has 53.
For those not in the know - EoA is fan-made LOTRO vannilla (actual vannilla) server.

Doesn't LOTRO still have regular servers? That's probably the reason why.

If I had infinite amounts of free time I'd like to dive into LOTRO because I heard it's the best at recreating Middle Earth and is relatively faithful to the books. It's a shame MMOs are so time consuming

The official lotro servers are cashcow and the game has been turned braindead easy. It is different game wearing skin of lotro.
