The truth is that no political or economic model can root out corruption and bad actors making people miserable. All they can do is maximize the number of avenues for recourse the aggrieved parties have.
Socialism can't work because shitters will always seek out the greatest delta in outcomes between themselves and the worst-off people in society. Inevitably, in a socialist system, that leads to an incompetent government lording just-above-middle-class lives over peons who have their education, employment and homes decided upon by some intermediate functionary, because government is the only way to get ahead of the common man in such a system.
A healthy system keeps government, business, religious organizations, non-profits and the general population all in a state of tensegrity. Where each has enough power to influence the others and hold the others accountable, but not enough to dominate the other four completely. (Which the US and most of the West had at one point, but have failed to maintain over the last 60 years in multiple, totally different ways.)
