This retarded meme never made any sense. Earthbound was never some zoomer FOTM shit with Twitch streamers playing it left and right. The majority of its fanbase came up in like the mid 2000s on Starmen.net. Back then you had to have emulated and played the game, otherwise you would've had nothing to be a fan of. No loud streamers or Reddit video essays to vicariously experience the game through. This article is comparatively recent and it never made any fucking sense.

It's called a secondary, or sometimes even tertiary

How can you be a fan of something you never played?

the joke is that shitloads of indie RPGs these days claim earthbound as inspiration, so people will claim to be fans of earthbound because they played Quirky RPG Maker Game #73 and went "I must immediately love the things that inspired this even if I never played them"

Me? I started but didn't finish earthbound on emulator, somehow I failed to finish a bunch of dungeons or didn't get sound stones or something and ran into a wall somewhere, but I had a good while playing it on emu as a kid.

any rpg that claims to be earthbound inspired is a major red flag. They're pretty much all garbage woke shit.

Most of the EarthBound fans back then only knew of it through Smash Bros. That's what this meme was referring to

Like half the people on starmen.net hadn't even played it. they only "liked the series" for the forum community inside jokes or because of smash bros.

Earthbound had a fucking huge cult following which naturally comes with people pretending to be huge fans despite having never played it.
