Implementing allies during battle.

With the help of a friend in Japan, as I couldn't find many numbers written in letters. He helped looking for them in moonrunes.
How can they be profitable with 5000 sells per entry? It takes one year to make and it's not completely bare bones, at least not the last 3-4 entries. There are dozens of people in the credits. Even if they are all Jr level and underpaid, numbers don't add up. They don't sell merch either, so what's happening here? Money laundering?

Usually with games like that the credits get bloated because they name everyone they outsourced to, even if the extent of the transaction was paying them $60 for a handful of models. The core team is probably like 2-3 full time dudes.

I'm using godot, the gameplay mostly consists of navigating an industrial setting, finding the keycards and operating environmental puzzles like doors, forcefields and elevators, while dispatching enemies on the way through a number of weapons.
It's supposed to have a stealth element with cameras and alarms but it's not fully implemented yet, the reactions to getting spotted by cameras or other sensors would range from triggering traps that shoot at the player or calling over enemies from nearby teleporters and rooms

Traps can also be turned to the enemies to dispatch them, you can open a valve to pour bullets from a pipe onto enemies (or yourself if you open the wrong one), take control of enemy mechs to kill enemies while you are safely hidden in the control room, disable a lightbridge with enemies on top of it so they fall in a vat of acid, etc

I'm working on a build of the game for August 31st.

The win state would record that you've passed the level and save the money earned during the level.
I don't know yet what to do if the player loses. I suppose it could be like in Smash Bros., where you lose a lot of money to continue the race.

(Re)writing the opening quests. Trying to keep them quick and snappy so you aren't bogged down with too much text. I added a little personality system that keeps track of how you answer and gives some reactivity from NPCs. Currently just tracks polite/brat, I'm not sure what else to add. I am getting the hang of making cutscenes in Unity. Here is a very cheesy scene that I put together as a test.
Facial expression track, body animation track, camera switching track, dolly tracks, look animator, beautify settings (such as bokeh) on a track, teardrop controller, to name a few things. I wrote a few scripts so that I can preview a lot outside of runtime. I am really digging the workflow.
Now that the technical side of things is done, I can finally go make content. The thing I dreaded the most. Starting with making a storyboard/shot list.

Anon, you are asking people for hundreds to thousands of hours of their time with no real agency over the project while you take the fun creative parts and leave them the dull implementation. That is just not a very compelling proposal. There is a market for that, it's the video game industry. They just don't optimize for "good game" because the only one that can afford to hire people are the money people.
Your best bet is finding people that need to do some project, any project, anyway, so they might as well make yours. That's basically just college students. Web devs also tend to make a lot of bullshit portfolio project and new ones are all out of a job right now anyway. Obviously this comes with the caveat that you'll get inexperienced people, and you still need to be flexible with your design because such a team will only learn how to make a game while doing it.

I'm just learning Godot right now. I plan on making a Cat Olympics game as my first project. Just a series of simple mini games where you have to maximize your barf coverage on an expensive carpet, race other cats to a bowl in an crazy cat lady house, climb as high as possible in a tree to get stuck in without stopping or falling, a skeet shoot except you're launching cats at birds, etc.
The idea being the simple mini games will give me lots of experience while still being relatively simple and controlled in scope.

Mainly trying to come up with boss designs which I can't show for obvious reasons. I have the basic ideas but the execution is what's tripping me up.
Of 12 bosses, 5 have concept art and 1 of which I'd consider to be good enough to be final. Another is pretty close to what I want but not finished.
I've mainly been struggling to make them look interesting because bosses are a big focus of my game, so there can't really be "weak designs" without the game taking a big hit. I've been tempted to ask friends for help on designs but feel bad because I have no money to compensate them with, so I just don't ask at all.
Otherwise, writing and coding are going well. Making GUIs in GMS2 sucks fucking donkey dick though.

I really like your game's gameplay. Can you make a version of it that isn't a person in a bikini with sex all over it? You're severely limiting your audience. You can now select your armor set from the main menu (don't worry, anonymous man, I've since changed "strength" in the description to "power"). The armor sets also now modify your attack power and resistance to enemy attacks, with the Regal Armor doubling attack power (as seen in the description) and the Bone Armor doubling the power of enemy attacks. The Health and Fire Pepper drops have also been modified to reflect which set of armor you are wearing, as Bone Armor doubles Fire Pepper drops and Steam Armor doubles Health drops. All that is left to be done for the armor sets is to include the passive heat loss into the Steam Armor (slowing the player down as if he is in extreme cold due to the immense weight of the powered suit), the ability to project steam projectiles similar to that of the Fire-Spit Technique, and the ability for common enemies to stand down when using the Regal Armor (at the moment I am thinking of simply making them ignore you, but in the back of my head I would love to do what Soul Reaver did and have the enemies get on their knees and worship you as you pass). I've also begun to add the ability for enemies to in-fight with each other. This will be useful since, if the computer-controlled friendly characters that fight with you attacks them, the enemies will get distracted and make a beeline at them and not you. I'll upload a video of this new ability soon enough; I stayed up until 4:00 AM troubleshooting that among other things.

Hey this is really fun. Bit of a difficulty jump going from old man to louise (I'm guessing he's just tutorial to give players a chance to learn controls) but I'm surprised at how good the systems and spells feel. This early into my playthrough my only real feedback is to pull the character's legs together when she runs. Running with legs apart makes it look like she shat her pants.

Thanks, yeah it was not easy. I see why a lot of games do not animate in game in Unity. Cinemachine is complicated, so I went with Game creator 2 for the camera work. I had to extend that to have previews outside of runtime. I have tried mocap too. The quality of mocap is blah. So much cleaning up and I still am in the process of getting myself a Coil Pro so that I can increase the quality of the mocap. With just a smartsuit pro 2 and smartgloves, it's not really worth it.

Louise is kicking my ass, cannot get past her. Her attacks deal too much damage for this stage of the game. Her spear throwing attack is too short and should go past the camera. Maybe I missed it, but I think there is no clear indicator on how to dodge her AoE attack (other than moving back), maybe make a gap in that wall of flames that you can go through.

Thanks, her whole concept is being this dumbass with really high str/faith that can deal huge damage but is really easy to run circles around. For the huge AOE, it's more of a positioning check to see if you're remaining close enough to just circle around her, and if you get hit by the horizontal version then it's a commitment check to punish over-extending during what might otherwise be a free DPS phase if you just walk around her.
I think some of the damage issues here stem from her getting a damage buff in her armoured form, so I'll probably nerf that a little depending on feedback.

I need some statistical advice. Is analyzing tree paths a "solved problem"? Is there a better solution than brute-forcing all permutations and eyeballing the results?
Basically I have made a stupidly complicated upgrade system, with boring number increases and skills and specific conditions. I want to make sure different ability increases are (more or less) evenly distributed across different levels of this tree. The most pressing concern is "this skill literally can never be selected because there is no path that fulfills its conditions", but I also wanna query arbitrary shit like "given a player selected this upgrade, what are the chances he will select another specific upgrade down the line.
Finding a node that can never be visited is simple enough, but is there any heuristic method of sampling tree paths? Because finding all permutations is a heavy task by itself, but finding correlations between two arbitrary options naively is just combinatorial nightmare.

The camera work isn't anything fancy, just a few methods to change the camera state from "follow" (locked on a target, ie the player) to a "free" state in which I can do whatever with it from an external scene controller. Most camera transitions and movement was done with tweens but since they don't run on the physics frames, they clipped through walls in some instances like when crossing a door, so I had to make my own system to perform those camera operations on the _physics_process method (picrel).

The thing is, since I'm trying to simulate player decisions (and whether any one path softlocks further decisions), there isn't really "an optimal" solution to find, whether locally or globally. So simulation theory isn't applicable, besides resorting to generation of random paths and pretending it's a sufficient sample. It's for balancing purposes, and yeah, subdividing the root tree is a solid option. Build suggestions is also a great idea, if only to generate presets for people who don't care about autistic minmaxing. But that only comes up when you're actually trying to balance in some direction, you still need that initial jumping point of finding outliers like "oh hey this skill that scales off STR is actually reachable by INT builds over 80% of the time". That sounds like data science problem that's too hard to describe online, so I hope that modern hardware is good enough to just brute force naive tree traversal.

That's a design question of how easy do you want to make it for players to make sub-optimal choices. You can be blunt about like putting STR gates in the way, subtle by color-coordinating the nodes, or just be entirely hands of and put in some weapon that gives you extra phys damage based on your INT.
You'll have players like me that aren't just likely, but will move heaven and hell to make a STR/INT hybrid work. You first need to decide if/how much you want to cater to that.
When you are asking what players are likely to do, that's a psychology question. I'd suggest you look at cash shops, because that's where industry points all their psychologists at.
For skill tree design, I'd suggest you look at Path of Exile, specifically Cluster Jewels and the Atlas Tree Gates. The devs sometimes to presentations about their work, if you're lucky there might be one that touches that analytical work.

I should add that, while I take into consideration all feedback, I implement things that I know will improve the game. Reflecting shield? Done, but only with the Energy Bucker (Longswords provide a block that cannot reflect, say, a rolling Pot Gremling). The ability to fly? No problem, but it's a flapping glide so I don't have to completely remake my pre-existing areas (aside from secret cave networks where you can find the keys to unlock suits of armor). Skipping cutscenes that I put so much damn time and effort into? Actually that was a good quality of life thing. Shit, I only implemented Y-axis inverting because the Faglyss dev never did and I wanted to salt the Faglyss fans' open wounds.

Something newer and shinier will always come along in your mind and it really does come down to discipline to sticking with the original idea. Of course that is the point of prototyping too. You quickly make a super rough version in a few weeks to see if that idea is fun in the first place, and if it isn't, move on.
If you think an idea you've already started working on is going to be mid, then you probably weren't critical enough with the prototype. There's nothing wrong with stopping if you feel it in your bones, you aren't committed to make something and you are allowed to make prototypes to get an idea out of your head whilst working on something bigger.
But if you've spent 5 years, on 10 ideas and not finished something, maybe you don't want to make games and you'd rather be a writer. That's fine too

It creates this paradox where I want to make a game with great gameplay, but the more gameplay focused you get, the harder it becomes to tell an interesting story, and when there’s no interesting story, I feel what I’m producing is mediocre. I feel it’s a vision problem too because I’m trying to have my cake and eat it with the story: gameplay ratio. func was filiping sprite in direction of player character, it was in script/scene enemy base, it worked in 3 types of enemies that inherit from enemy base scene, for enemy type nr 4 func couldnt find player, object id was type null (for other enemies func is working and object id is player character in level scene). Tried calling it in different places, even added timer to call it on timer timeout, was suspecting problems with how thing load into scene. Dont bash me, im just learning and it was probably silly mistake with tabs or something like that, when i went back to orginal code it worked, apart from wrong tabs nothing comes into my mind

Reworking how some of the placeable gadgets like ammo crates and health packs work where instead of manually placing them down you can just throw them down, similar to battlefield. (replaying bf1 is influencing my design choices yet again).
I'm also in the middle of remaking the loadout/class system + ui to be more intuitive and modular, where right now the loadout screen you just have the different hunter classes you choose from, but I am going to make a loadout screen where you can actually choose the individual loadouts for each class and the monster too

Select the armature, press tab to go into edit mode, then press Shift + A to create a new bone, E to extrude a new bone from another, Y to separate a bone from another.
For the hair and ears, since they deform with movement, you'll have to learn weight painting.
Select the character's mesh, go into Weight Paint mode, select the hair and ear bones, one at a a time, then paint.
Cold blue areas don't move with the bone, red hot areas do.
For the accessories, parenting them to a bone will do the trick.
Select the accessory, hold shift, select the armature, press tab to go into edit mode, select the bone that best fits the accessory proximity-wise and movement-wise, then press Control + P and select "parent to bone".

At this point the singleplayer portion is only missing this station detailing stuff. Multiplayer is coming next as the last milestone update, but that's mostly adjusting content so it works in multiplayer properly plus its main quest (which was already made before the game launched, just never implemented or tested).

What I have that's voice acted is anything that the player doesn't have control over: any dialogue in the comm window, NPC chatter, cutscenes, or conversations between NPCs are voiced, but dialogue like when you're talking to an NPC on a station is not voiced.

If you are new to blender, I suggest you few free addons for retopology.
I do this for 5 years, and I fucking wish I had this shit when I started
retopoflow (version 3 is free) - this is amazing, but slow to learn
Qremeshify - automatically create quads in a shape of your fucked up mesh
PolyQuilt - this is mid, but fast to learn
Also, you can do this without normal topology, just to get why everyone is doing this shit and waiting for ai that can do this instead

I've been working on the shoot mechanic. To begin with I created a goal 3d object and luckily most of the functionality to get shoot working could be copied from the pass functionality.
Next up is to create a goalkeeper who has a chance to save the shoot. Afterwards a scoreboard will be needed. After that the next major feature will be adding cpu movement / tactics which should start to turn it into a game.

Just automated bulk remapping of arbitrary mixamo animations to an arbitrary rifigy rig in Blender. Easy to expand to any rig, too. I don't know why I wasted time automating this whole process, but weirdly excited its all done and working. Blender is surprisingly really easy to extend and script, I'm really impressed actually

I think it's fine to try and style text textures and lighting by throwing test materials on your tofu boxes, maybe even skyboxes but actually modelling is a dangerous game and kinda locks you into what's usually pretty lame designs.

its more intuitive if you have been drawing
i still have a lot to learn ofc
actually found something called instant meshes on github
its external program that practically remeshes and retopologizes the entire model for you
the only catch is that you have to reselect the model after import and clear it for sharp edges
