I haven't played since the 90s but I remember it mostly being a tragedy, Cloud falls for Aerith but she only sees Zack her dead ex in him, then she dies and Cloud is all alone.
I only remember Tifa and Cloud being childhood friends.

considering the course of his entire life was set into motion by the thought of getting closer to her and protecting her and the fact that she went into his subconcious, unfucked his mind and brought him out of being a braindead vegetable for the second time (the first was when she found him lying on the street in Midgar), yeah I think Cloud has more than a passing interest in Tifa

Not really. Childhood friend love stories tend to be pretty mediocre because they rely on using backstory as a shortcut to romance, so there's no real development during the game proper. At least one of the characters, usually the girl, tends to be pretty generic too. It's fine if you don't want to focus on it much though which FF7 originally didn't really do.
