As I said in another post, Dark Forces is classic Western style when it comes to video games, that is, it's a game made by people who don't understand the medium. They hired architecture students to design the levels because Westerners have a fetish for realism. Since they don't understand how video games work, they try to create "simulations" of the real or fantasy world.
The gameplay in Dark Forces is so bad. Heretic at least will give you more speed, more action, more variety, more depth in the interactions between the elements of the game, and a much higher skill ceiling. Dark Forces is just an attempt to simulate a Star Wars reality, and that's it.
Heretic is lucky that it inherited everything I mentioned from ID Software. The guys at ID also had no idea what they were doing, but at least they focused on speed and pure gameplay, which already put them light years ahead of the Western philosophy of the time of creating simulations.
