Realistically, can WoW solve its new player on boarding issue?

But WoW is 100% pushing the story as the main draw. Classic WoW is great because it doesn't have some grandiose narrative like FF14, but nu-WoW feels the need to make a big all-encompassing story, and it's failing spectacularly because

2. They don't know how to tell a story to people in a game with vertical progression

The gameplay is actually solid for an MMO, which is why WOW survived for a long time.
What they should do is just embrace being a cooperative high difficulty PVE game. No more catering to M+ raiders, just remove raids entirely at this point. Streamline the levelling experience, and go ball to the wall on M+ content. Fuck just add more cooperative, à-la-carte PVE content.
Overhaul and simplify the entire story, simpler also meaning harder for the writers to fuck up. No more grand encompassing stories, Onyxia should be the biggest scale story to be told.
There you go, 20 extra years of WoW.

People play WoW for the dungeons and raids. No other MMO has comparable PvE. XIV is the only thing that comes close but it has terrible dungeons, raids are almost always pure single target ddr fights with no variety, class design is terrible and samey and healing is basically a joke because made for consoles

Just start everyone at whatever the level cap for the previous expansion is and then put them in the sandbox mode that is unlocked for alts in the latest expansion.

New players don't want to spend 200 hours listening to WoW's shitty story before getting to current content. And the current story will be nonsense without those 200 hours of previous story, so no point forcing them to do the new story either.

Create some unlocks for story content. Like cosmetic or mount tokens you get for beating sections of the story, so people have a reason to do it if they are at all interested. Add follower versions of all story relevant raids and dungeons so new players can actually finish the stories if they care about them, because the current system introduces them to shit that gets resolved in dungeons and raids they never even enter and then they start the next tier and nothing makes sense.

WoW is simply too bloated. It isn't a shitty story game by default like FFXIV, so trying to force it to become one is killing. Everything below max level is neglected, thus the developers try to get everyone to max level as soon as possible, depriving new players of the opportunity to become immersed in the world. Organic socialisation is all but dead with the advent of matchmaking, so players just see each other as replaceable NPCs, especially in regards to DPS. The open-world is worthless since nothing matters before max level and everything worth doing at max level is done in instances. The free trial is ass. The game is filled with bots and gold sellers.
Classic specifically has turned into an autism swamp of speedrunners and parsers competing in a solved, 20yr old game because Blizzard did fuck all with Classic.
WoW would honestly be better off as an ORPG similar to PSO and GW1 than continue to feign at being an MMORPG.

This is the most ridiculous part. I recently reinstalled WoW after last having played in Wrath and started a new character. I was really getting in to the Legion storyline,but just when it was getting interesting I got booted out. It's absolutely baffling that they would do this.

2. Then just delete all pre-current patch content and move them to classic servers of their own. One for each expac that will stay up in perpetuity.

The scaling in the latest expansion is always so extreme compared to the rest of the game, you're worthless the minute you turn 71. Your gear is like 200 item levels below the new standard and you just can't do shit. To a new player, becoming weaker as you level up must seem like insanity.

The game is almost hostile to new players, it's a miracle it still attracts any. The one-button dps is more of a solution to the fact the game doesn't teach a new person how to play. I started playing a vanilla private server a week ago after not touching the game for 10+ years, and this shit is still kind of compelling. Vanilla WoW got it right somehow. Blizzard doesn't have to be the one to do it, but somebody should make a 2025 game literally just like that, with a massive world, tons of bullshit lore, slow exploration, dangerous packs of overtuned mobs, and incomplete classes that have to rely on each other to cover gaps in their toolkits.

They could experiment with shit like valheim building or action combat, and that could make the game's design better, but it could just as easily end up breaking some fundamental part of the experience. I honestly think all you have to do is remake old, shitty, slow tab target combat with classes that need to work together in a brand new dangerous map, and people would go apeshit for it.

Hasn't their scaling been shit since they implemented it regardless of leveling gear though? Level 15-20s will carry dungeons because the scaling is fucked up and relative power drops off around 40. Hardly matters anyway, leveling stuff is still easy even with that drop off and they obviously do not care about the leveling experience. It was unironically better when you had to play through every expansion.

I only played it for like a year but XIV's class design is so confusing to me. Casters and phys ranged seem pretty well handled except SMN, everything else is a boring samey trash fire. They're even capable of making relatively balanced unique effects because they do it in PvP, but they have pulled absolutely none of that into PvE design. Gameplay is more than just functions

There is no fixing retail WoW, all you can do is play on private servers and that's it. Azeroth at War comes out in like 3 months and I'll be playing there as a skeleton, a murloc, a dark troll, and a furbolg. The custom races are much cooler than the slop Blizz has made the past decade and a half. For the real WoW to redeem itself they need to make WoW 2 in the style of classic.

Yes, but not without significant effort, which is likely beyond the scope of what they're willing to dedicate to it. The newbie zone they made a couple of expansions ago is awful. Ideally players should experience some kind of curated version of the old expansions that takes them through the main plot points. I think they have all of the technology for that, but someone would have to sit down and basically create a single player campaign out of 20 years worth of content. Then keep it updated to include ongoing expansions.

Why do people think WoW is failing? It has a certain game design and a specific audience that wants it. There doesnt need to be a redesign to fix what isnt broken.

It's not failing, but it's not really growing. At best it is reclaiming players by having an expansion that isn't shitty, and now we have housing coming in with the next expansion which drew back a couple of my friends. Brand new players find the whole thing to be impenetrable, and I don't really blame them. The way a new player is introduced to the game is this:

>You are ordered around by a charicature womeme with either a gay son or a stronk woman who don't need no man, depending on if you are Alliance or Horde

While I agree that the story largely doesn't matter for an established player who likely stopped giving a shit a long time ago (most people didn't even bother reading quest text to begin with), I think brand new players will just bounce off the game if they don't know anything about the setting at all. Lore can also be a draw for new players, take a look at how much attention 40k has gotten from people who don't even play tabletop games, it's largely due to lore videos on YouTube.

they'd have to rework it from the ground up by redoing older dungeons to actually teach players how to play their class, ether simplify dungeon routes or have something that guides players to the correct route in them. they need to update drops/quest rewards as well so you're more likely to fill out gear as you level up, its really common to be stuck with a piece for 20+ levels and have missing slots because some expansions just didn't award things like trinkets early on. blizz desperately needs to fix smurfing in low level pvp too, its an absolute fucking mess where every match has a few characters that are so strong that they can solo entire teams. probably disabled high levels downscaling with low levels and abusing talents, and normalizing levels and item levels so twinks and max levels dont show up and graveyard camp everyone all game.

right now as a new player this is your typical experience

This is my exact feeling. I played BFA and the writing had nose dived so badly after legion, which was already pretty low to begin with, that I couldn’t look past how outdated the gameplay was. For an MMO specifically it's more important for the world, setting and lore to be important. Actually wanting to spend time in the world you're going to be sinking hours upon hours into is a valuable thing.

A grand storyline isn't necessary as I stated above but having interesting quest chains would be an improvement, for sure. Unfortunately that's something WoW and MMOs have moved away from as a whole in order to pursue a more clear cut narrative, see: FFXIV.

The fix is to turn focus back on making the leveling portion of the game enjoyable as well. There was a clear amount of effort put into it before where-as now it's regarded as an afterthought and a chore, largely due to the players and designers insisting on it being such without recognizing the actual worth behind the process.

DDO despite its problems regarding its setting seems to recognize the value in the leveling process and has made leveling, as well as re-leveling the same character a core part of the experience through the reincarnation system. It's not the best solution out there by any means but I find it preferable to a game purely focused on end game raiding.

The gameplay ended when TBC released and started the treadmill cycle of content updates forever since (many original vanilla players quit right there because they were outraged their 60 epics were virtiaully worthless and beaten by lvl 62 hellfire peninsula gear).
The story ended when WoTLK released and the raid "Icecrown Citadel" and killing the Lich King Cinematic. Everything story wise afterwards has just been pulled out their ass. Some of it good (Garrosh), but most of it terrible.

Gearing is easy when a new patch comes, it's effectively a gear reset so you can do the new content, after one week of the pre-season patch you are pretty much caught up.

The current story is also basically a continuation of a Legion/BFA story, and the recent patch continues a story left off in Burning Crusade.

Tranny 14 players will never be satisfied with WoW because there isn't lallafel rape basements they can build in it. Every 3 houses I visited in 14 has some weird basement area with naked lalafel dolls.
