Why do people struggle so much at writing "friendly but a little bit mean" characters like old Sonic and cartoon Mario
That middleground seems difficult for so many writers they always go in one extreme or the other, either what they did with Sonic in Sonic the Comic where they made him a full blown piece of shit jackass who's just a cunt to everyone for no reason, or what they did to him now where he's a completely friendly harmless guy who only quips at the villain sometimes but evokes that 'guys, hurting peoples' feelings is NOT KEWL' 90's school PSA character feel

They just can't hit that smug cheeky yet kind bastard thing

Reminder they censored Sonic Generations Remaster (Shadow x Sonic game) by removing any "mean" jokes like Knuckles saying classic Sonic has a fat stomach. They also completely sanitized Rogue the Bat, her character is fully integrated as just another pal instead of a sex appeal character. It took them 20 years, but they finished the job with Rogue. She's nothing like her original SA2 counterpart.

Anyhow this is all the fault of Gen Z and PC vegans.

I never understand why this line in particular Baldy McBuckbroke so many people. "Baldy Nosehair" was just a nickname Sonic gave Eggman based on a wonky Tails-Wisp translation (the Wisps being aliens named Eggman off of his most prominent features; he's bald, he's got a big 'stache), it wasn't actually something Eggman did. None of these people cared about old-school Sonic calling the guy "RoBUTTnik".

I was playing the Sonic games that came out between 1998 - 2009 and I noticed that Sonic usually likes to fuck with Eggman and Knuckles specifically, for Sonic, he's pure so he can't stand innocent people being hurt, he wouldn't say some shit like "HEY Violence isn't cool man" its more like a "Tsk, This bastard"
