In Mario 64, the point of the stars was to be a goal in 3D space, and you'd have to do a bunch of cool platforming stuff to reach it
Rare thought the point was to collect as much garbage as possible

Not him but people back then did like it for the most part.

It's only in recent years that people have been looking back on it and retroactively hating on it because the mechanic where you have to change between Kongs to collect specific collectables was obnoxious as fuck.

Keep in mind kids back then typically had a small hand full of games they would replay again and again so having to replay Donkey Kong 64 levels wasn't so bad. Back then having to replay a game was the norm. But this idea is hard for zoomers who get their opinions from YouTubers to comprehend since they grew up being able to download a bunch of games free on their smartphones.

It's because the game was just that good, no one needed a new game for decades. Bananza has brought back the genre for today's audience which is also worth mentioning.

The “collectathon” part was never the major draw in collectathons. The greatest collectathons usually had a major collectable that often gatekept level progress and a minor collectable that was scattered around the level to incentivize exploration of the entire level and either unlocked a major collectable item or unlocked something substantial. Having a million different collectables that essentially do nothing and are tedious to get is the mistake Rare made where Mario, Spyro, and Crash succeeded
Anonymous No.718170581

>“collectathon”
NTA, but you don't actually get it. There were 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot, Mario 64 blurred the lines, and then you arrive at Banjo Kazooie which was more of an adventure game than a 3D platformer, that's where the collectathon roots come from. It's not about collecting stuff, it's about exploration and discovery, which is telegraphed by stuff to collect.

I remember DK64 being at least a little bit of a letdown, but it wasn't because of all the stuff each Kong had to collect, it was having to do stuff like beat Arcade Donkey Kong and Jetpac to access the final boss. Also I was kind of disappointed by how colorful and cartoony it was compared to the DKC games.

There's nothing obnoxious about it, there's a huge disconnect between modern gamers and when the game first released. Anyone who thinks that switching between characters and collecting different colored bananas is bad game design are spoiled by too convenient things in new games. Shit like fast travel, shit like grace periods in platforming, and shit like invulnerability frames, all kinds of shit that is expected by the retards of today.

SMO and DKB take from the Rare design school of having a ton of moons and bananas strewn about. Clearly Rare was in the right but was too ahead of the curve.

I still play and 100 percent this game every few years. Everyone acts like the game is really giant and bloated and takes forever, but the levels are actually denser than they seem. Most only take two hours to completely finish, maybe three on Fungi Forest.
Anonymous No.718174941
I just replayed it, got 101%. It was quite fun. I think the supposed issue of having to walk back to a barrel and switch and then go collect arbitrary collectibles only happened to me a few times overall. Most of the time, I went through any given area with bananas enough times that I eventually happened to bring the right Kong by for other purposes anyway. The worse filler was every minigame making four separate appearances, with the first two (at least) being near impossible to lose. My final time was around 20 hours, and I wasn't rushing, I spent a while fucking around and misremembering bananas.

This, it's satisfying to notice I can get somewhere with advanced movement mechanics, and for there to be something there to collect as a reward for trying and succeeding.

At the same time, I feel like Bananza's platforming challenges wind up feeling a bit one-size-fits-all because of that. The point is what you the player do and not what obstacles you're navigating, to the point that obstacles start to feel secondary as a whole. 64 makes sure you pay attention to what's stopping you, unless you're outright glitching past it.

desu that's why I didn't like odyssey (I played it until the credits and then I think i picked it up once after that?) and didn't even bother with banaza

>Clearly Rare was in the right but was too ahead of the curve.

I recently just replayed this. It's not too bad as long as you don't try to 100% it. Beating the final boss is reasonable as you only need half the golden bananas, along with getting 5k points in Jetpac and beating the 4 levels of the original DK with only 1 life (you get another by level 3). The final boss is pure kino.
Fuck the Beaver Bother minigames. Whoever coded that is a sadistic bastard. As soon as you see those beavers running in place against the edges of the middle hole, you'll feel the same rage I felt knowing the devs went out of their way to fuck you over in that minigame.

I thought it would be worse than it actually was, but there where character switch barrels practically everywhere around the levels

I haven't played Bananza, I was referencing Odyssey, and the specific instance I had in mine when typing it was during a challenge stage. It introduces a mechanic, you use it in a platforming challenge, and there's a moon and an exit. If you look backwards after that section though you will notice that the moving platforms you navigated will extend further up than you have been. If you simply jump on top of it instead of navigating them, it will take you up to another part of the level, and there's a second moon to get before you leave. Those moments in Super Mario Odyssey are very satisfying, if you think to look, if you think to try, sure enough.

Jet Force Gemini forces you to collect every single thing to fight the last boss. This requires redoing stages with each of the 3 characters and the collectibles can be killed by enemies adding to frustration.
Windwaker stops game progress to make you sail the entire map for tri-force pieces.
Metroid Prime 2 makes you go all over collecting bullshit that serves no purpose but gating progress at the end.

Donkey Kong never felt like the collecting was forced. That makes all the difference.

Cumulatively these made me stop buying any of these kinds of games.

I played on Project 64 and didn't have any problems otherwise. Even the fan thing inside the mechanical fish with Diddy didn't pose a problem and that's the most obvious indicator of any game speed/frames issues.

This, it was seen more as like "wow what value, look how many hours you can get out of this!" - even so, I got dk64 as a kid and did find it tedious after a while however. I think I only beat the game exactly once and just barely cared about it at that point, like "finally that's over."

I went into it assuming it would be something between sm64 and banjo kazooie, the original game of which I absolutely loved. Yeah it wasn't that..

I mean honestly not really? Most people didn't really give a shit about it. Honestly most people didn't play it. Personally I only played it at a friend's house back when and I was not interested nearly enough to get it myself, and basically no one I know IRL had much to say about it nor anyone I personally have ever known. It was kinda just there. No outrage, no excitement, most people just didn't care about it.
