But these two can be mutually exclusive. If someone says "I want to play this game", but then "I don't like the mechanics of this game", then they're not willing to get into the games. Anyone that tries it as it is, likes it, and plays according to the rules can be accepted. "Gatekeeping" is a filter for those who actually care enough to learn and those who don't. Sure it may result in people that could have played being excluded, but the result is that you only have people who really want to actually play the game.

I played in a server that was notoriously gatekept, everyone was unironically calling eachother niggers and faggots and it was very difficult for new players. It wasnt just 1 or 2, at times it was 10+ people collectively flaming the same person. Some peopled literally got bullied out of the server, or at the very least their confidence was shot and they became more silent
Over time though the gatekeeping dropped less and less, the experienced players started leaving, and the gates couldn't be held anymore. Now no one really flames one another and server rules have made harassment harder too. I witnessed the community slowly die and get torn from inside and out, its a shell of what it once was, yet I still play at times because of all the friends I have there & occasional sparks of charm
What I learned from these years is that gatekeeping is indeed possible, but it is very difficult & varies on the context, and you really need to know how to actually flame and insult someone properly, yet contradictorily the flaming doesnt matter, if the victim really doesnt care, or just self-mutes you so your words become empty.

The companies behind them homogenized these characters to increase sales. Yes it is. That's literally Paradox. They make the most popular games in their genre but its a niche genre. Other companies have sought to dilute the genre to gain market share and failed whereas Paradox continues doing well (although theoretically not as well as if they had theoretically successfully won over normies and made any of their games sell at the AAA-level). Games can be made to cater to a niche genre and remain successful by continuing to cater to it. Only greed demands the sloppification of every niche.
