What future holds for the MMO genre?
All popular ones on the market are decades old, right now

More exploitation.
Look at ESO:
subscriptions, cashshops, dlc, battlepass, various game editions, etc.
Everything in the world will get worse, unto eternity.

Does anyone wonder why warhammer fantasy died when THE SAME EXACT COMPANY was selling LORD OF THE FUCKING RINGS at the absolute peak of its popularity when all the moves were coming out?

Nothing but sunk-cost-fallacy and nostalgia bait for millennials. Pservers of legacy MMOs are the only viable future, and even those can only provide a fraction of the experience in even the best of cases. The wild west is over until the next big frontier pops up and gatekeeps normies and shareholders for a while.

People weren't, and still aren't interested in it compared to 40k

In the current market? Nothing.
The time of WoW clones with 3 role systems, global cooldowns and "stand outside the flashing red circle" fights is over. People want full action, but the amount of investment and planning needed for that on an MMO scale just scare off most companies.

Death. WoW is still going for some god awful reason, FFXIV is dying, OSRS is thriving and anything else is irrelevant.

Already heard it decades ago, since like wotlk was released and people run away from it.
ANd all mmo's with "action" died because big surprise, they are shit to play
On the other hand, ARR was released in 2013...

Majority of online multiplayer games are about competitive PvP these days. I don't see how PvP sandbox MMORPGs are not making a comeback in the near future.

The video game industry is about to crash. We are going back to three white guys making their dream game on a 2012 Dell laptop.
