i like it but it commits a cardinal sin that annoys me a lot: the soundtrack is amazing BUT the main battle theme is the weakest part of it by a landslide, which sucks because you hear it a lot

Because it's trying to tie into the greatest 2D JRPG ever. It's a wonderful standalone game that has a lot of cool gimmicks, it's just not as good as Trigger. They could have just removed the last few minutes and erased all direct tie-ins with Trigger and it would have been an excellent game that just happens to borrow a few characters and tropes from another game, instead of a vastly inferior sequel.

The convoluted and badly written story, the color mechanics are awful, the battles are slow and boring. Also the OST is probably the most overrated vidya soundtrack ever made.

Storywise, is a mess. The first two thirds of the game are pure RPG bliss in an awesome, immersive world.

Then Chronopolis happens and all the plot resolutions you were promised to get never happen in-game, don't make any sense if you haven't played Chrono Trigger, and if you did, they barely do and are practically shoehorned in.

The finale being so goddamn awful and leaving people with a sour taste overshadows the rest of the amazing game.

It DOES has best girl though.

Characters were there to fulfill the Suikoden 108 playable craze. The main story characters were fine. Serge, Kidd, Harle, Fargo, Irene, Norris, Gyrobac, Razzly, Glenn, and even Leena had more than enough screentime in the story and that cast is larger than Cross's.

I realized the people that complain about the story are zoomers that don't read literature and need everything spoonfed to them. It's the same with xenogears. They complain it's convoluted as shit, but I realized they don't read enough to actually fill in the nuances and hints the game gives you. Zoomers are functionally illiterate.

It's extremely bad at being a sequel, Cross shines when it isn't trying to be one and it's just do its own thing. The last 25% of the game are an utter embarrassment because of that.

So it sure doesn't help that it's a sequel to Trigger, one of the most objectively praised JRPGs ever made, whether you think Trigger is overrated or not.

late game is basically just strong>strong>spell and doing 2k damage per character turn if serge has shit like the mastermune and you have dual einlanzer glenn

if you don't want to use magic that turn, light>strong>strong is the highest damage you can do, once again, because only strong attacks can crit. which really diminishes the value of lights and mids.

Lets see, I would put ff7 and ff9 above it, but they arent as replayable. Cross is a smallish jrpg. What about non-Square games?
Its a give and take. I could argue bof 3/4, Eternia, Legaia, Dragoon are all as good, on a balance of factors. But not outright better. Cross mogs almost every game on visuals and story. Just like with Trigger, being too easy isnt a big flaw imo. None of these games have a deep strategy, its just with many you get more meaty, grindy, standard jrpg gameplay. Cross is something different at least.
I would say LoD and Eternia are better, everything else not as appealing to revisit. Tales of Phantasia for ps1 is probably better than any of those, its almost a perfect game.

It's an okay/10 game with a 12/10 soundtrack. This will ruffle some feathers but Cross OST > Trigger OST. Xenogears' OST was better than Trigger's, too.

I can agree with this. The main battle theme being as grating as it is really clashes with the rest of the game's incredible 11/10 OST. Still, every battle ending with that based rendition of Lucca's Theme was a nice enough touch to make the goofy battle jaunt less annoying, IMO.

I'm playing this for the first time and about ten hours in. I'll leave to avoid spoilers but I just want to say the combat system and music are great and I can't believe I slept on this game for so long. Never played Trigger so idgaf what kind of connections it has.
I just hope the game doesn't revolve around romance between Serge and Kid, because Leena is clearly the better girl.

To be fair, Xenogears suffered a lot from the budget being gone towards the end and the last but of the hand is mostly someone sitting in a chair talking about all the cool adventures they had off screen
