This is alright but the weird tacticool detailomh on the boots combined woth his ascot is weird. Sonic's shoes work because he collects gold rings. Besides the white stripe and gold buckle they are minimally detailed. I kinda got the idea with the jacket, but it doesn't work. A puffy court vest could accomplish the same reference by evocation.

I feel like the leather jacket and overall shift in design is probably indicative of Spark's changed backstory.

In the original backstory of Spark 1, Spark was actually just a jester, and it was something he enjoyed.

Then later the entire plot was rewritten, and Spark was changed to an electrical engineer who had to do the jester work as a fallback after losing his real job, and was unpopular and bad at it.

Basically, the Dev wanted to shift things toward being more "serious".

When I see gameplay line this, and I’ve seen several webms of games where the character zips around super fast and gets launched way up high, all I can think of is how the fuck you’re supposed to design a level that isn’t completely trivialized by that much movement. Enemies? Just go around them or jump over them, they’ll never catch up with you. Hazards? Launch yourself over them with the nearest hill or slope you can find. Seriously, what can you do? I feel like levels would need to be more vertically oriented and ascending, where the player would have to have a minimum speed to break through a membranous layer up to the next part of the level, with the membrane forming the ground that you can only fall through in a hurt animation. But even then, what if you’re stubkocked into falling through multiple layers? That would suck. Maybe there’s some sort of portal that closes permanently once you come out the other end, or some mechanism in eh uh a large trap door shuts beneath you so that can’t happen. Help me out here, guys.

Here’s Peppino, you all know this guy. What makes his design work? He’s a fat middle aged guy wearing a chef hat and apron. So what, right? The game’s art direction is a part of character design. If this was in a less cartoonish style, it wouldn’t have worked. Instead, Peppino squashes and stretches and does typical cartoon takes, so his design being simple works, especially since they needed to animate roughly 3,500 frames for him. He’s a protagonist in an extremely fast paced game, so his black and white design is perfectly readable and contrasts nicely over the backgrounds and from other enemies. It also helps that he’s very expressive.

I think it's pretty solid. It's got consistent palette, good distribution of solid colors and more noisy detail, thematically appropriate with the gothic/ nouveau thing they were going for and it has "conventional appeal". Contrast this with Penny which kind of succeeds at some of this but fails because it's weirder design quirks are not accented by normalcy which just makes it confusing to look at.
Penny's devs taking inspiration from Treasure is odd considering Treasure never designed a character that stuck despite the quality of their games.

Funny you mention that, I was thinking about both Mario and Luigi when making that post. They are cute and charismatic little fellas no doubt, and it helps that their games are good and there are some mechanic and visual elements tying into the whole plumber thing (like going down pipes), but if you think about the games themselves are what do a lot of heavy lifting for their image. That's not to say that visuals were secondary, you can clearly see that a good amount of effort went into the visuals as newer Mario games were released, and Super Mario World looked great, but it's a bit funny that the character is an incredibly acrobatic and slightly chubby italian plumber that doesn't give the idea of all that athletic prowess immediately, you only see it once you play it.
But that may also just be me applying to much of the modern design sensibilites we're used to. Sonic is also a great example about the opposite because the amount of Sonic fans who only like him for his design and never played the games is considerable. So there is clearly a lot of things to juggle when it comes to appeal.

I think people have a tendency to think about enemies in sonic incorrectly. Since Sonic is so fast, the enemies are typically designed to stay put but have some attack or defensive mechanic that happens at a relatively generous range, the challenge comes from defeating them while maintaining flow.

I feel like you're misunderstanding the shape language of the original when all the "bulbous" shapes you dislike are there for readability at a distance which works good for the type of camera the game uses so all the animations can express themselves and read better. Just by looking at the thumbnail on yours the hands and feet become easily lost in her body shape when they really shouldn't.

I genuinely think people's gripes with Penny can boil down to them simply not liking her face design since the stylization on her eyes make her look like a sad pug. Most of her design is influenced by how Tetsuhiko Kikuchi drew his characters for Treasure's games back in the 90's, but the way he drew characters faces is an acquired taste.

Sonic as a character was so successful because of peer review, essentially. It's design-by-committee but the committee is a small group of other skilled people.
Indies could leverage something similar by asking their audiences to pick between options more.

Sonic's design is successful because it was made by competent artists. Design-by-committee is unnecessary and is the substitute method for incompetent non artists like business people. While Sonic underwent this process partially, it was ultimately created and defined by one artist, Naoto Oshima, who's excellent at his craft, and further iterated by other very competent artists over the following decade. Plenty of other examples of successful protag designs that did not need committees or focus testing, because competent artists already know what they're doing and what works. If indies have to rely on shit like committees and focus testing, it means they're not capable artists, they're closer to consumers or business people who sometimes are technically able to draw pictures, which frankly is probably not far from the truth most of the time.

I tend to think of character design has being made up of two halves:
1) Theory (composition, form and function)
2) Appeal (what your target audience likes and what makes sense for the character)
The "Theory" part of character design is something any skilled artist can learn but the "Appeal" half is kind of tricky and ephemeral. You don't necessarily need to pool talent together to capture it but it makes things easier.
Sonic went through that process twice and I think the design was more successful as a result, although yes the bulk of the work was done by Oshima.

A lot of the top ones fall into the trap of overdoing it on "character design tips" to the point that they forget to make an appealing character.
