Bard is very good. As >>718181482 said, An archer focused Sword Bard is overpowered to the point that it can solo Honor Mode. Lore Bards are excellent, too, just not game breakingly so. I wouldn't bother with the other 2 sub classes.

Nah, this is not true for this game. All classes get to cheat with their own class specific choices and for low CHA classes they usually get advantage on rolls. Wizards have Friends which is utterly busted.

In DOS 1-2 or BG3, the best choice is usually to pick a strength-based character with high speech since as the party leader, you'll be closest to enemies when combat starts, you can carry more stuff, and you'll have better speech options for the dialogue.
In the case of BG3, that'd be a paladin, unless playing one just doesn't appeal to you at all.

I always play Archer or Magick Archer classes if that's an option.

Then you either have to respec a story character, use a hireling, or bring gay ass Wyll with your party. You can get the other charisma based character later in the game, but most first time players don't know how to get that character.

Nah, not only paladin. Barbarian gets an immense shitload of unique intimidation options with advantage on them, and Giant Barb gets thaumaturgy on top of it. He's an insanely effective face even with 8 CHA.

Playing a bard now and its pretty fun. Pretty much every dialogue check succeeds without save scumming and its good in combat. I'd recommend going into lore or swords subclasses but anything works desu. You can respec anything other than race I think later so don't worry too much

I played Ranger in one playthrough and found it incredibly fun. I had put it off thinking it'd be a boring class, but it ended up being my favorite playthrough.
Love the casting animation for Rangers too.

What's the best mod to increase the difficulty?

Most of the mods I encounter break the balance by just upping the numbers and making the game absolute bullshit to play.

I want something that feels balanced, refined and well-thought.

The combat is the most fun part of the game and with a CHA class you risk skipping a lot of it. I always go unga bunga 8 CHA or fail rolls on purpose because it's more fun-

Plenty of Builds for MC to have good CHA. MC Having good CHA is a must for Autist's like myself, because I don't want to bother switching to the party face to talk to people, or reloading a save to talk with the right companion, or getting cutscene ambushed and talking with the wrong character. The game is smoother with a High CHA MC.

Does going STR Bard work or is it gimping yourself to not pump DEX? Also is it worth dipping two levels into Fighter for Action Surge?

I enjoyed playing bard because I could play the lute after taking my actions while waiting for my next turn. I don't even want to replay the game with other classes without that.

Start Fighter for Heavy armor and you can ignore DEX for the most part. Obviously you miss out on Skills/Initiative, but it opens up other options.

Action surge + war cleric domain ability with Improved extra attacks means you get 6-7 shots plus eldritch inertia will proc debuffs and you get war magi for stuff like shield and haste.

main playthrough was me as a bard and something else, can't remember. good fun buffing and CC'ing people.

other playthrough i started (but never finished) was everyone a ranger and we all summoned bears so there were 4 bears on the screen at once and it was pretty funny. played on easy for this one, fwiw.
