It didn't have legs
Anonymous No.718190875
It was a gimmick fighter.
If they actually made a proper fighting game with the characters, it might take off a little.
Anonymous No.718190938
It literally didn't. It sold 3 million units. In the context of the switch install base at the time, the fact that it was sandwiched between Mario kart 8 and Splatoon 2, and the fact that it was relatively barebones content-wise says a lot about how the things that went right with ARMS went very fucking right.
Min Min for the win win

Nintendo wanted it to be an E-Sport so badly that they put all of their focus on the multiplayer, so the single player experience was extremely lacking.
Needed a story based campaign mode or something, or at the very least an arcade mode that didn't force you to play the retarded mini-games in between fights.
I love the concept, the characters, everything about it. Except it wasn't made for me, it was made for people who always have a player 2.
Anonymous No.718194321 >>718194798
>anticompetitive western mindset that idealizes "stymie other people at all costs" doesn't fit a new genre of fighting game
>hyper-meticulous control schemes that would take a long Youtube class to explain all the differences between when the game is advertised as pick-up-and-play causes people to balk.
>no advertisement because Nintendo America are as Chuck would say "not real gamers" and didn't know how to sell it. It would be too much to expect a relay between Treehouse and EAD team for ARMS while they were working on Mario Kart World and, as recently revealed, Drag X Drive.
>Smash Bros. and debacles around Splatoon 2 soured the tourney scene for Nintendo so NCL also threw their arms up (pun intended)
>meta is pretty deep but the game on the surface seems rather superficial... it's a hard sell to Nintendo noobs while there are flashier games for people to hyperfixate on
>until the Switch 2 came out it wasn't an easy game to emulate (Ryujinx makes arms go through each other) and it sits in that weird narrow between already being 60 FPS on single-player + co-op, but also it's not friendly to 4 Player because you can only team-up in Grand Prix mode unless you do random
>for whatever reason Nintendo fixated around Min-Min as the new mascot, who moves like a Resident Evil tank. What's more Sakurai did a dogwater job conveying her in Smash, which is because he doesn't like fighting games in general, as we all know
>when it came out everyone got scared because Ninjara was unstoppable if you didn't understand the meta. Ninjara is a character who can't be hit if he enters shield, only grabbed and rushed, which means that there were very few outs at that time.
>fighting games aren't very popular to being with, how much less an original IP one
>it came out less than a month after Splatoon 2. It was the choice between a barebones behind the back shootan'-like without Replays, Gallery, ARMS Test, Level 6 or 7 Grand Prix, or Tournament Mode versus Callie and Marie... uh yeah.

DOH! I meant a month before it. l aways get thrown off because of the Switch Splatoon 2 bundle that came out months later. Freaking Nintendo

It sold pretty well, all things considered. Fortunately, they salvaged Nintendo's greatest creation by adding her to Smash Bros; the IP may be dead, but Min Min will live on.

>the IP may be dead
/v/ only says this because it didn't get a sequel on the Switch. But how many Nintendo IPs actually get multiple mainline games each gen? Even Mario hasn't gotten that kind of treatment since the Wii (unless you count Super Luigi U as a separate entry I guess).

So do you guys want a sequel on the Switch 2?
Any improvements you can think of?
I'd start by fixing the retarded ARMS unlocking system.

It sold like 5 million copies, so it is actually one of the best selling fighting games since SF2.
Anonymous No.718196097
Controls suck.
As someone who tried really hard to get into it, the controls are just so bad. Motion controls are downright unusable and the button controls are also shit and not very responsive.

Make each fighter be locked to their own set of unique arms.

Have different punch attacks, and different dodges.

Maybe have punches that can be angled or ricochet off walls, floors and objects

And make each special a unique attack instead of a generic rushdown attack using the arms' element.

That's literally all it takes but this EPD team is fucking retarded. As it stands the only thing separating each fighter are gimmicky passives.

A lot of that wasn't really doable since the game was tied to motion controls. The punches and movement couldn't be too fancy.

It's always been obvious the game has no depth, it's barely a step above wii sports boxing

Anonymous No.718203603
>>718190645 (OP)
The style and character designs were absolutely screaming for a proper story campaign, and there wasn't one.
Other than that, failure to fully have a button-binding for everything. While there *were* button control options, more refined moves were locked behind motion controls. Nobody wanted them, so they just didn't bother to play.
Anonymous No.718203851
It didnt. They just didnt keep adding to the IP so it slowly loses people willing to play it.

>Niche market (Boxing + weird mechanics)
>Uses inherent controller gimmicks (Joycons)
>It's not accurate at all (they still haven't fixed it btw).
>Characters that are not appealing to any audience they might as well be palette swaps.
Just off the top of my head.
