The modern developer cannot even begin to imagine how to make a game fit inside this bad boy.

That's because it's for storing save data.

wow who could image that game sizes would increase exponentially over the years. It's not like it kept happening for 40 fucking years

nintendo was so jew the gamecube launched with only 512kb memory cards

Early FF games were programmed in assembly, I'm gonna take a guess and assume this was the norm during the NES and maybe SNES era.

Then they advertise it in bits instead of bytes so people think it's half the size of a PS2 memory card

They use "blocks" and most memory cards were 512kb or 2mb lol.

Shut the fuck up, you dumb nigger. Damn near every game 6th generation and below would have the developers interact with CPU instruction codes in some capacity. You are a smelly, disgusting Indian teenager who cites facebook and youtubers as your source of personality and information

"memory cards" were for saves, the shiny circle thing you insert into the console is the game

Oh yeah I forgot they were telling people it was like 50 blocks so it looked bigger than it actually was lmao.
Making up arbitrary units of measurement to scam people should be a crime.

Just checked and they used C starting with the PS1. Writing 3D graphics in assembly would be tedious.
C is still low-level but not on the level of a NES game, which is practically embedded software.

that's a memory card. you weren't supposed to fit whole games in it. i'm not even sure the PS2 would be able to read one fast enough to play a game off it if you used some trick to put a whole game on a memory card.

There's a difference between doing some hardware calls and interrupt routines in assembly and programming the whole game in pure assembly.

It is. Its actually faster than the USB 1.1 ports, so modders sometimes use memory card to SD card adapters to play games on slim models instead of USB flash drives.

Haha, wow. The Xbox I grew up with was modchipped, so I never saw this. I always saw the storage measured in MB and GB.
This whole time I thought it was just Sony and Nintendo pulling this.

Beat me to it.
I've found that games are technically playable via USB storage on there, but FMVs never play at full speed.
So in all likelihood, someone really could develop a perfectly functional, not entirely rudimentary game that just runs from a PS2 memory card if they wanted to.

I liked memory cards. I always thought it was super cool I can just take my save data over to my friends house with whatever game we would play and it was just that easy. Data corruption was a bitch though.

If you look at save files of modern games, the open world games and RPGs can easily hit 20 MB or higher.

Those already exist. Aside from the previously mentioned backup games that run fine on sufficiently large SD cards, even stock memory cards can run some games. Most PS2 homebrew software is small enough to fit on a memory card, so a lot of the homebrew games can as well. Classicube can run from the memory card, for example, as can some emulators.
