Save it as in make the game good? It's possible but not very likely, although recent changes have been steps in the right direction. Save the game as in fix the public perception of it? Not in a million years as long as the hordes of third-worlders incapable of reading system requirements still exist.

An expansion will probably help, but they need to absolutely nail it, and honestly the problems with the game are so foundationally deep that I can't see anything saving it. It's just shit, the worst in the series, no idea what they were thinking.

There's no reason to play when everything dies in 10 mins max and your flooded with materials just glancing at the monster, allowing you to craft whatever you want after like 2 fights...which also doesn't matter when you kill them in 10 mins...the gameplay loop was really just destroyed.

There's no true endgame. They spent too much time making a 5/10 story and goon outfits for Alma/Gemma instead of making their game replayable. Was fun at first but after getting the platinum I have nothing else to play for.

Before I could just join a hunt and leave the game one and people would kill the monsters and I'd get rewards. I tried doing this about 8 times straight a couple of days ago, all hunts failed, party members were always killed at the 15 - 20 minute mark. Dropped the game and will never come back.

Elder dragons have the highest scale ceiling due to them being the equivalent of mythical beasts. It has been a very long time since MH did more of a focus on a monster cast of regular, non-Elder monsters who then also provided overall satisfaction with hunts. Wilds has been unimpressive (and is re-using a fan favorite for the current endgame) in this regard.

The worst part of its foundational issues is most of them were conscious choices made by them to attract a hyper normie audience, the kind of people who have FIFA and CoD as the only two games on their shelves and evidently it worked to some extent, but can you really rip apart all that foundation to lose millions of potential players with the hopes of getting millions more people who have already decided they no longer wanted to play your game?
In a perfect world, they would have already cancelled the expansion and just moved on to the next game but the greenlight for the expansion already happened by the time they got millions of pre-orders, but how much can they realistically fix on a shaky foundation?

I'm still playing the game but there's very little hope. Every weapon has to be reworked but at best they can pull a Frontier and give everything a second toggled moveset in return for deleting Focus and the magnetic attacks that don't actually work half the time anyway. The balance curve for the expansion needs to exclude the mouthbreathing players that they balanced the base game around. The story has to be minimalized but they probably got all the expansion story mocap and half the voice acting done before the game even came out.
There's just a lot of mind-boggling things in the game they should have caught when the game first came out, and now they're just straight up having to mass-buff some weapons so they can keep up with the desperate need for increased difficulty they're adding in these band aid fixes, the GS change list is still insane to look at.

They made several mistakes and now have that feedback for next time. It sold plenty enough to warrant the usual expansion pack, which could potentially fix some things (but they'll never remove new features like perfect guards and focus mode so it's still fucked in that sense), but even if it doesn't fix much or anything they WILL take all of this into account for the next game because it's been so universally criticised. The series isn't in any trouble at all.
Fuck I hope the next version of their engine isn't an absolute disaster though.

Kirin being able to summer lightning whenever it wants, everything about Yama Tsukami';s existence, Alatreon being able to wield multiple elements, Lao-shan Lung and Dalamadur's sheer size. Notice, basically all of this is the opposite of monster hunter. Where you have one giant enemy with giant weakzones, in which you do not have limited movement.

Focus mode is not fine for not just the reasons I described. Anon, there’s a reason this general control scheme does essentially does not exist prior to wilds despite the twin analog sticks being around for decades now.

Third person melee combat with reticle aiming it’s just a shit concept, even if it could work the entire game would have to be designed around it. IE not just slapping it into an established series but it’s own thing

Focus has a stacking effect to where it causes the game to be less engaging. Take the simplest example of, you hit the monster in the legs, it toppled, now you’re going to go bonk it in the head. An extremely simply and common gameplay state.

Without focus, you have to

Making you traverse more ground, which means you’re more likely to run into some other gameplay mechanic, like a small creature, an invader, a player (flinching kind of irrelevant now besides), a ledge, a slope, some other endemic life trap

There’s a plethora of mechanics you might have been FORCED to engage with simply because you were FORCED to take a non-optimal path, because the lack of focus requires you actually face your hunter in the correct position. This is the true reason why wilds fails to maintain players: focus simplifies EVERY aspect of the game state. You don’t even consciously recognize it. You don’t notice you missed a potentially neat interaction because instead of engaging with all the mechanics it’s mostly

Monster Hunter Wilds was my introduction to the series. I hated how trivial the game felt, especially with focus mode, so then I tried to fight without it or a Palico automatically heals you. I ended up dying a few times but that was me fucking around trying to figure out how to use the charge blade properly. Combat was unsatisfying.
