if someone joins your game they will be killing everything in 10 seconds until you get to the last stretch of the dlc, either find someone to start together or play solo for 90% of the game+dlc

just play with friends from the beginning till endgame, that's the best MH experience you can have

I only had an endgame player steamroll the mosters a handfull of times. Players tend to stick to the hunts that match their current progression. You'll have a lot of solo hunts in the beginning because no one will join. Still highly recommend
