For the same reason that games played on Linux stutter much less than those same games played with Microsoft's compatibility layer. It is either compile / download compiled shaders ahead of time, or compile them when they turn up during game play.

Are you using the trackpads? I recall it being really responsive and enjoyable, but I don't remember what I set up. Check the community controller layouts.

Also you should really have the libertatis mod installed.

Modern game dev is a nightmare clusterfuck of different GPUs and shader languages so to maximize compatibility the host machine has to compile the shaders itself. When the hardware is identical shaders can be precached and shared and the steam deck does that automatically. It's a best of both worlds situation.

The steam deck is meh. For some emulation its alright but as a gaming device its vastly underpowered for anything that's not a pre 2014 games. You can make the argument that if it cant run on the deck its not worth playing. Doom eternal on the deck runs fine at 60fps+ so I think its just optimization.

>t. owns a deck OLED

Gamecube emulation an OLED is just too good. Theres no other handheld device that can play retro games and indie games.

Definitely not the ROG Ally original (Z1 or Z1 Extreme). Nor the AyaNeo Geek. I'd go with Steam Deck OLED for best battery life.
Though the Ally X might be better, I'm not sure. I'm only going off the PC handhelds I've owned.
I guess the Switch OLED might be decent too if you're into that, but Switch 2 is already out so there's no point. The Switch 2 battery life is mediocre at best.

Switch 2 makes most of Switch 1 games play better, I don't know why some people compare it to the Steam Deck and vice versa due to both being different types of handhelds but the best handheld to compare the Switch 2 with would be the PS6 handheld which I'm sure the Switch 2 will run circles around.

Ally X has a superior battery life to the OLED, especially when running SteamOS. It also has a similar screen (VRR is almost as good as OLED) and is about 1.7x as powerful. The only downside to it is no trackpads, but if you don't play games that require them then it's a non-issue.

if the only thing you care about is raw power then some of the newer UMPCs are better but the eck is still the best one for the price, software integration and actually functional suspend and resume imo

>I also have serious doubts about that Elden Ring port. How playable is ER on deck?
It's playable at native res but you're not gonna get a stable framerate higher than 35fps. I get like 16W TDP in overworld and 11W in caves (so about 3-3.5 hours of battery life) but I turn down most settings except things that are free like texture quality and things that make the game look like ass if they're too low like AO.

Because the Steam deck has a set hardware configuration, already compiled shaders can be downloaded instead of generated on the fly (or in a pre-compilation step at the start of the game) like has to be done on a normal PC, saving it from in-game stutter.

It's a linux thing and it is a GOOD linux thing.
It means you won't have to spend a decade looking at shaders compiling like happens specifically with DirectX12.
Assuming the game is well written and do compile shaders at boot, there are several games that will compile shaders DURING GAMEPLAY, and give you horrid multi second stutters... on windows.
Unless you get it to run the VKD3D on windows and download the shaders yourself and the game is compatible with this specific stack.
Then you're using a superior API to emulate a garbage one on your windows.

A middle ground with the complications that entails. It's a handheld PC so it gets PC game settings, and their shitty ports where applicable, but because of the generalized nature of the Steam Deck, games can specifically target its specs alongside the Wine/Proton profiles that are made. There's still user end necessities to figure on a per game basis, especially since not all games support Proton and a lot of weird things need to be handled for some of them, but if it works on Deck, it's gonna be consistent across Decks that don't fuck with their OS.

not everyone has a gaming PC, and a Deck may not be playing the latest games the best, but it's a solid middle ground option for a Steam library on the go and the TV with a dock. for my needs, a large emulation library plus my retro games on Steam that are controller viable is exactly what I need out of what I'd be playing on my TV from my steam options. plus you can get GOG and Epic on there with the Heroic Launcher so it's not totally limited either.
