Should I play 7 Remake/Rebirth, or should I just watch them?
I watched my little sister play 7R a bit like 5 years ago and it seemed 90% cutscenes.

For reference, the only FF I've beaten is 16 and I LOVE that game.
I like Nier/Drakengard, and Bravely Default too amongst other things.

I played ff16 first as well and then slogged through ff7r which was a 7/10 game. Rebirth blew me away. I became such a big fan that I am currently going back and playing the other ones - for some reason i used to only play wrpgs when I was younger

The de-makes are shit, and they are LITERALLY, no joke, a fucking SEQUELS to the original 1997 game and its HALF A DOZEN spinoff-sequels from the past 25 years.

That's right: THE remake people waited for TWENTY YEARS ended up being a fucking timey-wimey MCU alt-reality sequel, with shittons of idiotic woke trash, ruined aesthetic, butchered gameplay, god-awful pacing, and the audacity of not even FINISHING THE GAME at once, and just pushing it out as an episodic trash. Turning THE JRPG saga into a literal wannabe DMC-shit with nu-Witcher style edgy setting, is absolutely disgusting. The current execs only want the literal "wider audiences" bucks, shitting out statements like "we're NEVER going back to turn based combat or stylized visuals!"... only to act surprised Pikachu when their trash keeps flopping, and their competitors keep performing far better.

I don't understand what they were thinking when they locked Cloud's last manuscript behind the To Be A Hero challenge. That's the second-hardest fight in the game. Gotterdamerung I could understand, but something like a manuscript shouldn't be locked behind something like that.

Combat is most of what you do in those old FF games. Random encounters up the ass to the point of boredom. You eventually even stop paying attention just mashing Attack over and over again and is not like the original FF7 was that much different. Is not till you get to a boss that you get to do something slightly different, like finally getting to use your magic and limit breaks. FF7 Rebirth's combat in contrast is actually always engaging, fun and has more depth than every FF game that came before combined.

I’ve gotten a little colder on Remake post Rebirth’s launch, the linearity and padding stands out a lot more. That being said, if you’re interested I do think it’s worth playing once. I think Rebirth is a must play though, probably my favorite game of all time.

The gameplay is way better than the story except for maybe the last 20 percent, and the story picks up.

You have to put it on dynamic or the boss fights become too easy, the chapter select hard mode is pretty kino, as well as the extra end game side stuff.

play the original FF7 (preferably the one where the models aren't low-poly). I played Remake first and I regret it. There is too much bullshit in it with the time ghosts that it makes the story difficult to enjoy and even follow because you're constantly confused what was a part of the original story and what is there to subvert it. For example there's a sub-plot about Cloud memories being wrong and if you haven't played the original, that plot is a complete mess because the all the subversion shit clashes with it. the story was written for people who already played the original.

Just finished rebirth. I planned on playing through quickly and checking it off my list, but that was a terrible approach. Every drawn out cutscene, mini game, game over, slow walk, extra corner of the open world was frustrating. I forgot to have fun. But after seeing the little recap that plays during the credits, and just how much I experienced, it was a great adventure. I actually feel sentimental about the early parts now.
