Why are no Elric videogames?
It's some of the most influential fantasy fiction of all time, ripped off by The Witcher, Final Fantasy, and Game of Thrones. It has an absolutely kino main character and setting and yet it has 0 adaptations. Why?

People who don't read fantasy genuinely don't understand just how influential Elric was.

For most people, they know the surface level stuff. They're aware of Tolkein and Martin, and if they're really, really adventurous they might even have heard of Sanderson, Pratchett and Dreyfuss.
But the reality is the fantasy genre, and especially Sanderson and Martin and Sapkowski, owe a lot to Elric of Melnibone.
When Tolkein and Lewis came up with the fantasy genre conventions, they terminated thought there. When Moorecock came along and broke them, he opened the genre for everyone to come and write anything in fantasy paint. I'll take it as far as there is no Star Wars without Elric.
So much of the visual language of Elric informs what we view as the aesthetic of evil in fantasy today. Long hair, spiked armour, dour, Vampiric features. All Elric.

I do wish his series got more love, but the reality is, anything deeper than Sanderson in fantasy is unmarketable to normies.

I don't get how the Witcher is the one that ripped off Elric when GRRM literally stole Valyria from it, made Elric in all but name an important character in the Dunk and Egg novellas, and named one of the regions for one of its villains and GW stole Chaos, the entire faction down to the symbol, from it; yet somehow the Witcher is the one that keeps being brought up. Does it really come down to a white-haired protagonist being called White Wolf?

I really think Anti-hero has lost all meaning.

At first it meant a Bilbo Baggins type, someone who doesn't want to go on the adventure, or isn't suited for the adventure. But they go anyway, prove everyone wrong about them being a detriment and succeed the quest despite being out of their element.
It was this wholesome little thing.
Then the gritty 90s came around and the anti-hero twisted into being a raging douche that's only nominally on the side of good. And I fucking hate that.

Anon, they adapted Conan. Multiple times.
Nobody adapts Elric because it's heyday in the English speaking world is over and back when it would have been financially viable to adapt, Lord of the Rings wasn't adapted yet and everyone thought fantasy movies would he budget shite.
Add to that the Elric series is told largely put of order and in disconnected plots that make franchising a fucking nightmare.

By today's standards? Nothing really?

Elric is a Wizard, prince to a decadent crumbling Empire, and an albino. He worships a chaos God named Arioch, but unbeknownst to him or Arioch, Elric is a key figure in the battle of Chaos VS Law VS Balance and his destiny is to use the weapons of chaos against chaos.
One day, Elric and his cousin (not the cousin he's fucking) find a pair of swords. Stormbringer is Elrics, a blade that calls Elric master, yet Elric feels it has enslaved him. Stormbringer cures Elrics sickness of the blood, meaning he no longer needs potions to survive, and seriously enhances his combat abilities. Stormbringer is also hungry and feeds on the lives it takes. It is fine eating the life of Elrics enemies but it prefers his allies.
And that's the story, Elric is lead around from point to point by the Black Blade and it feeds, and he is incapable of throwing it away because it chose him. After it killed the cousin he was fucking he threw it into the sea only for it to resurface and launch itself back to his side.

At the final battle of the series, when all timeliness have conjoined and Law and Chaos are having their final battle, Elric and the Black Blade are the only survivors in the universe. Stormbringer declares "Farewell, my friend. I was always a thousand times eviller than thou" and kills elric, then flies off to find a new, unspoiled universe, implied to be ours.

By 70s standards irs Grimdark. By today's standards its about as edgy as Dragon alAge.

Yes and no.
Moorecock boriced that heroes all tend to have the same traits in fiction, so his canon multicerse is that all these heroes are the same spirit hopping from universe to universe, the Eternal Champion.
He also noticed that these heroes usually have an iconic object.
So Frodo and the Ring = Elric and Stormbringet = The Eternal Champion and the Black Blade

Nah, multiverse was a kind of fantasy. Moorecock was being inspired by stuff just like Moorecock would be inspiration for writers a decade later who had read his stuff when they were younger. The dudes making D&D, Warhammer stuff. Uh, Zelazney and his Chronicles of Amber (maybe. also the original Chronicles not the stinky second chronicles)
Elric worked because it was fantasy novellas & short story format. It's like a pulp magazine series instead of those 1000 page monstrosities Robert Jordan punched out with WoT. God that series was wordslop.

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane series is another case where it was super edgy when it came out but is pretty tame by today's standards. Say what you will about Sanderson, at least he understands how to do vague mystic metaphor.
I saw a lot of people confused by thr confrontation at the end of the series and I'm like.

>souls clash
>equal power
>soul that wants to die swaps places with other soul, so it can be in the body that is dying
>soul that wants to live happily accepts the body that will survive
>soul that wants to live achieves victory because the other soul moved into a body that fucking died

You gotta remember character like Bond, Tarzan and Conan came from an era where writers knew the paper their stories were printed on was gonna eventually be thrown put, pulped up and made into new paper.
More than that, they were paid by the word, so a lot of them never met an adjective they didn't like.

This kind of economic environment changed the stories that were written, encouraged risk taking behaviour in the writing, because who cares? The story will be pulped. And it let the authors play around a lot with words to stretch their payslip.

So you get a lot of weird concept fantasy and science fiction that really wants to talk about its concepts. It hooked in its audiences by being weird and unique because nobody cared what the writers wrote, and they weren't being economical with their words so they could spend as long as they wanted telling you why their characters were cool.

Conan was never a huge pop culture phenomenon outside of the movie. There was a long running comic series from Marvel in the 70s that kept the character relevant until the movie came out, but it was never huge. I really like it. It's the only series I know that does the viewpoint switching between different characters right. They all feel like their own thing, not just something for the story. Everyone has a goal, things he cherishes, different morals or ideology. And it's about a crusade. Crusades are kino.
It's super grimdark, but it just fits the world. Also one of the few series where the magic just works. It's done very well.

The male rape posters aren't joking, but it's a minor part. It's for the grimdark/character reasons, not for trying to get the reader horny. Don't avoid the book because of that.

If you feel like dropping it read chapter 6, JiΓΌnati Steppe. Only do that if you'd otherwise drop it. And no it's not anime literally-me wishfulfillment slop like you may think during the prologue.

Lovecraft. Most pulp fucking sucks, he's popular for a reason. He copied a lot from Lord Dunsany who was also a great author. Lovecraft's prose is just very evocative, reading Eric you are told about so many different dimensions and Moorcock somehow makes it boring. Eric books have cool concepts but they are usually described too matter-of-factly. The only bad thing I'll say about Lovecraft is his protagonists aren't very compelling.
Issac Asimov also isn't bad if you like sci-fi, but I'm not the best judge since I barely read sci-fi.

In short big "good is beautiful ugly is bad" vibes
Some ugly monstruous green martians turn out to be noble and it's a case of nurture and culture vs nature but in general protag immediately tells friend or foe from their face

I like it, it's a cheesy trope and in general in the series the bad guys are very loathsome and the good guys very noble and it's pulpy and fun but you can tell the author really believed it as science and pulled from that

He also has a weird moment about the KKK in the Venus series where the protag is a bit unconfortable with the acronym of a rebellion group's name in the planet's language sounding like the KKK and it being unfortunate but also why even put that moment in if it isn't some sort of dogwhistle

Basedllenials can't handle the truth unfortunately.
They legitimately have no great writers or artists. They're a cultural black hole, doesn't matter where they are on the political spectrum. Half of them worship braindead coomerslop and the other half hate that coomerslop only because they think it's problematic and end up worshipping their own kind of coomerslop anyways.
They project their obsession with porn onto gen z and alpha, but really they remain biggest consumers of porn along with gen xers. So many millennials just fried their brains by being allowed online unsupervised. Zoomers suffered from this too, but more of them were herded into social media, with other people of their age.
The subsequent generations will experience an increasingly restricted internet. They will be increasingly normiefied, and eventually people will remember millennials as a cultural low point created by the free-for-all internet.

It's incredibly slow and meandering, almost boring at times. But in a kino way.
The descriptions of people, places and things are so richly detailed that the book can dedicate three whole pages to a random hallway niche with a statue in it that the protagonist walks past in one scene and then never sees again. Completely ridiculous but utterly mesmerizing.
Maybe it's just that I have some kind of fetish for improbably-huge sprawling castle complexes (like Lothric Castle in Dark Souls 3)

The closest thing I could compare it to pace-wise is something like The Night Land but much more professional and less repetitive/headache-inducing.

Because despite the author being an open Communist, who wrote a book, where the main protagonist is part of a superior race of Aryan Superhumans and a bookish nerd with a vampiric constitution, who needs his magic sword to stay healthy and read in his books about how his race is ireedemably evil and thus decided to betray his entire race and help in their complete genocide by Humans, who not only are racially inferior, but also have many of the same inferior morals, but because of the Communist power imbalance these cruel, stupid Humans are still better than the psychopathic evil not-Valyrians.

Despite all of this, his books still feature way too many things like honor, feminine women, masculine strength, barbaric freedom, which makes it from the perspective of today an extremely right-wing extremist book, despite the theme of the story basically being an Aryan Übermensch genociding his own race, because they are mean.

I use Romantic fantasy to refer to how Tolkien was looking to capture an idealized past with his fantasy. To get in touch with very ancient stories and imagination and pursue making a strong image of that for us today to emulate.
He wanted to make a foundational mythos for the English people, that otherwise didn't have one. So he borrowed a lot from Germanic sagas and told a morality play with them. The setting is the point of his work.

Where Sword and Sorcery fantasy really wasn't seeking to create an idealized past, but was just using distant history (or sometimes the far future) as a setting for a self-contained story. An excuse for where and when these stories were happening, rather than that being the entire point of the story.
There was usually a bigger message, but it wouldn't be of the same shape as above. The point wasn't to capture a lost identity. Often it was instead forward thinking. Howard's Conan might be set in the past, but it was about how men should act today and shape tomorrow, and the setting was almost incidental.

Low Fantasy means fantasy that takes place on Earth. Like the Arthurian Legends, Soulcalibur or Conan.
A setting having more or less magic and elves and shit doesn't affect whether it is Low Fantasy or not.

Jordan had actually already written the ending before he died. For the rest of the three books, Sanderson just had to follow the almost comprehensive and complete notes Jordon left behind. Overall I think he did a good job but I still have some hate because he added a fag character for no purpose other than to exist. Jordon had lesbians and possibly uncomfirmed butt pirates before but they had ay least some purpose in the story.

It was really funny reading REH's, 'Beyond the Black River", where he talks about the Picts as savages.
Especially through Conan, who absolutely hates them and considers them subhuman, but the Narration has to chime in that they're still Whites and Conan is going a bit too far.

I also recently checked out "The King in Yellow", and it was hilarious how one story started off as describing a late 1800s vision of a utopian America that defeated the Kaiser's Germany in a war, built tons of public parks and services, helped the Indians settle down with respect and wealth, rolled into an economic miracle.... and also expelled all the Jews.

Moarcocks wrote all his life to pay rent. He was a pay rent writer. He wrote every weeks into whatever bullshit publishing would accept his chapters in order to pay rent and food.

Elric is stupid. Moarcocks admitted it was stupid. It's basically "Elric stumbles into a Demon Ruin for the 18th time this month, and using his sword of PURE KICKASS, destroys the mutants, and the cannibals, of the city of ruins with demons". Chapter 48.

MoarCOCKS had a very big influence on D&D and subsequently an entire 30 years of fantasy and geekdom. But no one can say MoarCOCKS ever wrote a good book in his entire life, or a good chapter.

>I know nothing about β€œreal-life Gorean slavery among some people in the BDSM community.” The β€œBDSM” reference worries me. I dissociate myself from BDSM, at least as I understand it. I may, of course, misunderstand it. I wonder if one would settle merely for β€œreal-life Gorean slavery,” because, as I understand it, BDSM is not Gorean. If something is not beautiful, it is not Gorean. In any event, I am assuming that what is involved here, in any case, is consensual. If a woman chooses to submit herself, voluntarily, to a master, it seems to me that is her business, and his business. She would then, of course, be a slave, and would be treated as a slave. One supposes remarkable fulfillments may occur in such an arrangement. It is, of course, important to treat the slave, however uncompromisingly strict you are with her, however much she might fear you, in a humane way, as one would any other animal. Some men, I gather, dislike women, and enjoy hurting them. That makes no sense to me. Women are wonderful, and precious. It is a delight to own one; why would one hurt her? What would be the point of that, mere sadistic pleasure? I think we might distinguish between, say, S/M sex, or sadomasochistic sex, and M/S sex, or Master/Slave Sex. In a sense they seem opposite. Love is important. It is not to be confused with cruelty. Gratuitous cruelty seems to me uncalled for, and ugly, morally and aesthetically. Too, it seems unworthy of a true master. The point is loving and serving, and owning and mastering, not hurting. To be sure, the slave must understand that if she is not pleasing, she is subject to discipline. She is not to be left in doubt that she is a slave. It is easy to avoid discipline; she need only be obedient, submissive, and found pleasing, wholly, and in all ways. Sometimes a slave may desire to be reassured of her bondage. There are many ways in which the master, if he wishes, may see to this.

But honestly, for all the Gorean books has a bad a bad repute, they're mostly Conan the Barbarian: we sometimes take sex slaves, edition. Gor isn't half as bad as many people make it to be. How can Elric be a ripoff of a character that has not been published yet?
Remember, the first Elric story, The Dreaming City, came out in 1961, and the first time TΓΊrin Turambar shows up in any detail is in The Silmarillion from 1977 so the Timeline does not match at all.

Moorcuck was a postmodernist faggot deconstructor before GRRM. His relevance disappeared because he was a cuck & a hippie. GRRM is heavily influenced by Moorcuck. (Everyone who says the most prolific ripoff of Elric is the Witcher is fucking insane & just parroting what others say. Chaos THE WARHAMMER FACTION DOWN TO THE LOGO is ripped straight from Elric). The dragon riding Valyrians are straight ripoffs of the MelnibonΓ©ans and Bloodraven is more Elric than Geralt ever was (& Fulgrim is even more so but Games Workshop shamelessly stealing from others is another can of worms). GRRM is the modern Moorcock. Moorcock shit talked Tolkien and became irrelevant as his own 'standards' were beyond his own ability to live up to. GRRM came along & did what Moorcock never could, but raised the bar in an even greater fedora tipping way and has now shot himself in the foot as well, unable to even finish his series. In 40 years there will be another fantasy flavor of the decade fuck who sees himself as Tolkien's rival and GRRM will be supplanted by him as he did to Moorcock.

All these people want to 'deconstruct' the 'myth' of good & evil to be more 'real' while ignoring LotR was written by a guy who literally fought in a war; the most morally gray war in human history. You can't lecture a man on 'realism' when he actually fought a goddamned war & you didn't.

Still, inspite of being written by a faggot, Elric is a cool character. I hate his author & always will, but Elric himself is cool & I will simp for him until the end of days. But like, FUCK, why the FUCK would you leave Yyrkoon in charge of MelnibonΓ© after he tried to coup you? I don't care if you were being memed into fighting by the god Games Workshop ripped off to make Tzzentch. You should have hanged Yrykoon by his fucking entrails nigga. God damn.

WE WUZ EREKOSΓ‹ N SHIIIET. I SWER NIGGA WE WUZ ETERNAL CHAMPIONZ. WE WUZ SAILIN DEM SEAS 'O FATE N FINNA LOOKIN FO TANELORN.

I'm just curious if there's some specific origin point of the imagery. Did someone do an illustration or cover of an early pulp magazine that made it standard? It had to come from somewhere because it's not from Conan himself. Was it Tarzan?

Fedora tipper here,

WAAAY too much of atheism is not a disbelief in god, but angry tard raging against Christianity. I didn't read any of Elric until relatively recently, but growing up I read LotR, Narnia, and His Dark Materials and I've always been blindsided hy how much more His Dark Materials needs Christianity to be understood then LotR or Narnia does. In a world where Roman paganism still dominated, I could sell LotR and, with a bit more difficulty, Narnia. That's not the case with His Dark Materials. His Dark Materials, despite being an ATHEIST work, depends on the existence of god to communicate its themes and set its own story into motion. There is nothing fundamentally atheist about the story except half of the time Lord Asriel is talking. Elric is overwhelmingly better at this, but the spite and deconstruction shit is still there. Far too much of Elric seems to be about doing the opposite of what Tolkien and Robert E Howard did. That's not to say Elric doesn't work on its own, it actually has moments of building things apart from just tearing shit down, but even then, the spite comes through a lot. Unlike most anti-Christian media, Elric actually builds on something, the character of Elric himself, but when that's all you do, it becomes more interesting to just borrow the character and shove him somewhere else then bother with the packaged deal of Elric's Warhammer-lite world.

It wasn't so much distrust of organized community as it is distrust of improperly elected authority that Conan detests. Conan frequently was a member of various communities that he took control of, like raiders or pirates, to get whatever he wanted. He detested the unjust, incompetent and those that abuse their position to escape comeuppance, the stereotypical richfaggot psychopath would be something Conan would absolutely not abide.
