If you like old Final Fantasy games and Dragon Quest then yes. I will say the story falls off in the 2nd half. Very much the artists game with the world design and music. 8.5/10 for me one of the best games of the year so far but I played it on Gamepass didn't buy it full price

You can build your entire party around facetanking everything in the game even on the hardest difficulty. I personally find it more satisfying to make my party into glass cannons, but the option for a more defensive play style is still there. Weakness exploiting doesn't often come up though, I will give you that.

It's fun when Sephiroth launches Super Nova because it's rare, in Expedition 33 you'll have to sit in front of enemies combos all the time late game AND they have two turns. You'll have the means to one-shot all of them, it's not fun but still better than watching them for hours.

I beat it on release on hardest without spoiling myself and I had fun. I kept thinking about the possible plot twist after Act 1 and being like

only to be surprised with a completely different outcome and plot twist by the game's end, and then another. Admittedly the plot twist retroactively makes the game a little worse but it genuinely surprised me so I gave it a pass because it's been a while since vidya caught me off guard.

the more I mull on the story and read through all the E33 threads that fill to the limit the more I feel the story is worthless. Like there is never any conclusion you can make about the characters or even about grief or art. It's just meant to be endlessly interpreted and have people go in circles debating each other like those armchair psychologist streamers who have never seen the sun but argue over human rights in a time of active war. There is nothing to gain from this story. I have seen people say how Verso is one of the best written characters for his meta role in how he is centered in the conflict but he doesnt feel human, Maelle doesnt feel like a human. If you like JRPGs it'll probably be the best game you've played in a decade. For anyone else it will be a well made game worth playing through once. The storyline is good and the characters are pretty memorable. The soundtrack does at lot of the heavy lifting here though,without it this game wouldn't be getting nearly as much praise.
