because they are free and many japs are too poor to play games and have leftover for any other enjoyment, especially non-adults.
But those are the peasants that make this game populated, which creates a power dynamic for those that are willing or capable to spend money to stand above the others as the second audience.

Gacha is fun. I used to feel sad about never having a gf but rolling gacha girls feels sooooooo good, I don't really care about my situation anymore.

Basically. All of the multimedia shit is godawful. The game was never anything to write home about either. It just banked off of the wombo combo of gijinka + nippon banzai (hmmm, familiar). It absolutely has run out of material and has been in an excruciatingly slow death spiral for longer than it's been good (HMMM...).

It got a movie based on the first serious arc (Benizakura) which did really well and prompted a sequel based on the Shinsengumi crisis. I guess the second one must've done worse since they stopped after that.

Because merch? It happens all the time with JP IPs too though. Plenty of anime for example flop in terms for BD and DVD sales but they make a hefty return in merch. All those BA figmas and what not arent going to sell themselves you know. Azur Lane is the same. The gacha itself makes no money but the softcore figmas here in japan are everywhere.

It's the last bastion of otaku culture. Otaku got pushed out most anime and regular vidya to make it more palatable for normies. Gacha is one of the last places where ridiculous fan service is still a thing.
